Pro/am Requirement to Dance Heats to do Championships

Yeah the heatlist page source works for me. Once you figure out the formatting, you can do a search for something like "Heat 224 [Ballroom B]" or "L-B2 Full Bronze International Waltz" and get the number of hits in source. If you want the actual names, you'll have to do some scrolling...

Um... ouch. I hardly think my polite request over the phone - asked once and only once, with no whining or negotiating, and only because pro asked me to take care of it for him, then my showing up at the comp and dancing my very best in my uncontested heats approaches the scale of this example. I realize that the frustration and strength I got in response to my request is likely about whomever they spoke to before me (which isn't ok, but it happens). I haven't mentioned which comp, I haven't made it personal, and not only did I go and participate to my very best, I fully intend to do so again next year.

I was disappointed, yes... and I will always be disappointed with uncontested events, which means I'll likely always be trying to arrange competition. If that makes me unreasonable, well, I'll just have to deal with that.
 
Fair. Total miscommunication - I do sometimes ask day of! Us asking earlier is actually trying to be helpful ... pro thinks that if we're going to mess with their schedule, we should tell them as early as we can. Not sure I totally understand why this advance notice is a bad thing, as some comps have been really happy to have us tell them early, but I'll just chalk it up to philosophy/approach/IT tool differences.

I have basically resigned myself to dancing singles on my own. Small fields, and me dancing in A, means generally next no one dancing in my levels... especially when you have 5 or 6 levels of 'gold' (pre-gold, gold 1, gold 2, full gold, gold star, advanced). Trying to pick the same levels as the one or two other ladies that might be coming does not make my odds that great!

Really, I'd rather dance uncontested at my true level than jump down for 'competition' and 'win' at bronze or silver and be that dancer that everyone hates for sandbagging. (This may be part of the reason that I am so frustrated with having to dance singles - especially 2 sets - as a pre-req. though!)
 
I'd just like to throw out some encouragement for thanking the registrars if one takes advantage of their willingness to move things around at the comp. I haven't had the chance to at every comp I've been to (since I obviously don't want to bug them while they're slammed), but the times I have done it, I've been left with the strong impression that they're vastly more accustomed to people coming up to them to complain than they are with people thanking them for their time and effort.
 
Lol, thanks guys. Not being old enough for A2 or B, and dancing in (usually) the top 2 levels for singles gives me limited ways to move - down in level is my only option, which I don't feel is very sportsmanlike, so it's nice to know that some might move up in level/down in age to join me... it's an option I hadn't considered, TBH. Let the FB collusion begin ;)

Because they cannot finish the schedule if everyone's entries are in flux. And moving you out of an uncontested heat today (a month ahead of time) means that someone entering that heat tomorrow is suddenly left uncontested. They have to finish the schedule first as it is. And that doesn't happen until just a few days before the comp.

And calling just a few days before the comp is likely to get you a nasty response because everyone is super busy, packing up, working their real job, and then flying and setting up. A very very inconvenient time to do unnecessary data entry. (especially if you call the organizer who the majority of the time does not even do the registration... someone else, the registrar, has that computer and all of that info.)



If you are still saying "who might be coming" you are still thinking of doing it ahead of time. Just put your entries in and take the stress out of the situation. Fix them when you get there.



I hope any registrar would not drop you into a bronze or silver category anyway...

Look for ANYONE uncontested around your division/age. If you see uncontested L-A2 or L-B you might ask them if they want to drop down to you. Start to make friends with these women! If there are G-A you might ask them if they want competition... although since G are more frequently left uncontested most any girl teacher worth her salt with a young gold student has already figured out how to merge her men with the ladies, so even if the book says they are uncontested I bet the teacher has already moved them once she got to the comp. The night before an event when everyone is arriving usually has at least 2 or 3 girl teachers in the registration office, drinking wine, and going over their heats with the admin. (are we just the only ones that actually know how to do this?)

and, here'e another thought, don't take it so seriously...these things happen in the singles dances all the time.....heck....I am in a huge scholarship this weekend and yet 2 of my 3 sets of singles are uncontested....oh well
 
here's my thing; is having someone in the single heats the only point of dancing them?....I guess for me there is enjoyment and the work of seeing what shows up on the floor regardless....an uncontested multi I can see going to some efforts to ensure competition, but I honestly don't care on the singles and I would feel that way regardless of cost...I understand preferring competition, but I don't see needing to jump through all sorts of hoops at the last minute to make it happen on the singles...just my perspective
 
It's certainly not the *only* point. That's why I've more or less found peace with them, even when uncontested. But I think it's fair for people to consider it *a* point.
