Pro/am Requirement to Dance Heats to do Championships

Pick you comps wisely. Go to the huge ones. You will get your contested singles. Oh and split floors giant on deck lines and late night scholarships. It's all a trade off
 
Not Ohio... not embassy and emerald I just looked had at least 5 in open advanced A1 standard and at least 3 in open gold A1 standard last year at emerald.... got tired of counting I'm sure smooth is the same rhythm i could see having problems but thats rhythm everywhere

so in FF's case there are three events where she is assured of contested singles and huge multis..... well... let 's go FF!! no excuses now:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
 
I didn't mean FF specially. I was thinking, for example, of my heats at Capital last year which had three couples *after* I was rolled in with the ladies or my heats at Millenium many moons ago, some of which had just me and one other lady. As I recall, the silver A smooth *scholarship* was uncontested that year. (Not an event I danced in, just one I watched with interest.)

So far as it goes, I had one or two other couples in my freestyles at Ohio this last year, which suggests uncontested heats are plausible there. But that, at least, was because of the paucity of guys rather than a more general "there are no guarantees for As" thing.
 
capital is a mid sized comp at best

were your ohio freestyles "against the gents only" coz dude we know thats a problem for the guys:confused:
 
Yeah, that's why I put Ohio in a separate paragraph. It's a different issue, really.

I can't say I agree with capital being a mid-sized comp at best, but that's ok. I'm fine with putting it aside. Surely you can agree that millennium large. My program from it that year was thicker than my one from Ohio. Florida demographics though, I suppose.
 
Oh, and on a lark, I looked over the Embassy results. I wasn't looking specifically at open gold (since my point really wasn't about FF) and it was trivially easy to find uncontested freestyles. (Example: full silver American in the A1 division)

Ohio or Emerald are on the someday wish list... but comps like Manhattan are a lot more realistic for logistic and funding reasons, and are way more likely to happen if I manage to save enough to compete in the States!

This. Months and months of scrimping and saving only to discover you could have just danced a show or a small local comp instead... and knowing it'll be months before you can afford to try again... and the fact that it has been your fifth consecutive comp with all uncontested singles (which once happened to me)... well, it can just get a little tough to take.

Definitely a bummer.
It's kind of preordained to have a lot of uncontested heats when you slice the divisions super-fine, though. In contrast, West Coast Swing comps have a grand total of eight regular divisions and a handfull of specialty divisions:
Youth (under 16, IIRC)
Sophisticated/Masters (35+)
Newcomer/Novice/Intermediate/Advanced/Allstar (open to anyone)

Champions (must have won in Allstar in past three years)
Rising Star (not sure of the rules, it's more of an exhibition anyway)

IME, Youth is generally 0-1 and once 2 couples, while Rising Star is 1-2 couples; the rest are all big enough to have finals and even semi-finals (the one I can remember that wasn't quite that big was a Jack&Jill that had seven leads who were automatically in finals and 19(!) follows).

For the main Newcomer-Allstar sequence, you point into the next level and shortly thereafter out of your current level (there's a small range where you can compete in either).
 
I was just thinking. It would be great in an uncontested heat, if the judges could mark you with a letter grade A, B+, C, F. That way if we always dance uncontested, at least we could tell if if our dancing is improving or not. I would also prefer to have an option not to be announced as first in uncontested heats. I find that embarrassing.
 
That's a proficiency heat where you get given a percent as a score. However, differences in judging still makes it a less than perfect comparison across competitions. (And I have absolutely no idea whether comps that offer proficiency heats count them as the singles.)
 
And everybody scores 90-something in proficiency anyway. Sort of like A--- through A+++. Reminds me of bond ratings. LOL.
