I agree the store was trying to protect others. I think they must have run into other people who thought gloves were protective of themselves, though, and they just came up with this protocol as it was as good as putting sanitizer on peoples' hands, rather than argue.I would have guessed they sprayed your gloves to protect others in the store. Leather gloves could carry virus. Few people wash their leather gloves everytime they go to the toilet. Most stores are heated so I'm surprised the store didn't request you put them in your pocket and just sanitize your hands.
In deference to the protocol I kept the gloves on for my visit instead of taking them off. Fortunately I wasn't doing anything that gloves would be too clumsy for.
