Returning to the dance studio safely (covid-19)

Prior to turning Pro as a dancer, he had worked in a major national laboratory, running experiments with some nasty, nasty virus stuff.
Yeah, if he's used to protocols used for studying, say, anthrax or pneumonic plague, or a similarly dangerous virus, the Covid-19 protocols would look pretty weak by comparison. Let's be glad that anthrax or pneumonic plague are not what we're dealing with.

Dance/USA is ballet related. In the document linked:
"--Dancers should maintain a distance of at least 6 feet apart, but preferably 10 feet apart if possible, as there is some research showing that the breath from exercise can carry the virus further. Safe distances have not been determined for a dancer in a studio.
--No activities that require direct or indirect contact including: partnering, tactile cueing, direct floor work or touching of the same equipment "

A bit harder to comply with in partnered dancing.

I bought several Vera Bradley cloth masks from my local Hallmark. They were $8 each. They are pretty and reasonably light weight. There is an insert for a filter, if you want/have one. I haven't tried wearing one dancing yet, but it seems like the best option of what I have.

One local studio is starting in person group classes by appointment (while continuing online classes)... 10 person max, must dance with only one partner (or alone), couples stay 6 feet apart from other couples, instructors will wear mask and gloves. Mask and gloves are optional for students. Check your own temp before arriving at studio. Must arrive studio no earlier than 10 minutes before scheduled class (and you'll probably be kicked out immediately after). In person group classes are free for 1 week.

Do you happen to have any information as to what kind of protective measures may be recommended or required with regard to COVID?
They are instigating a lot of protective measures, but among them, are fewer dancers in a studio with considerable physical distancing They are using multiple studios with dancers taking classes off an live feed. The teacher and pianist are in a separate location. Don't remember exactly which company - I read it on my FB feed a few days ago.

Did my first semi-private today. Also known as a group class, but with way less people.
1 teacher, 3 students, giant studio, we were about 12 feet apart. No masks. No touching.

Cases in my state has been flat.
Fatalities have been dropping.
We started reopening over 4 weeks ago.

Thank you for sharing, Larinda. I'm looking forward to when the local yoga class I attend starts again.

Studios in my city are reopening with varying degrees of caution. A couple of them have announced social dances this month -- but no mention of guidelines and one specifically stating that pre-registration is not required. Nor do these studios keep track of who shows up at a party. I expect that by the end of the summer there will be an infected person showing up at a party and infecting a number of people. Without a list of those at the party to facilitate contact tracing, there will be a mention in the media which will not be good for partner dancing long term.

Thousands of people have been in the streets for eight days in a row. That should tell us if a paltry dance social is dangerous.
I don't think that people outside with good ventilation (aside from the tear gas) and random contact with others will inform about the hazard of being indoors with recirculated air from people exercising in close contact with another person.
