Sprucing up my Standard gown - sewing questions!

that can be goo for areas especially where you need the out fit to stretch...but you could also do that at the hem as well I suppose
 
Hi Dance Forum members! Fabric question for you - has anyone used Chrisanne Satin Velvet for a standard or smooth skirt before? I accidentally bought satin velvet instead of stretch satin - I'm trying to figure out whether I will be able to utilize my mistake or whether I'm going to have to buy new fabric. Thanks for your help!
 
I've used it, but in a bodice not a skirt. It's definitely heavier than their stretch satin. I think it would probably be too heavy for standard, might be ok for smooth but not great. It also depends on the design you're going for if it will work.
 
Bump! Quick question - I have a chiffon float that i want to add to the back of my smooth dress - it's small and asymmetrical, and will give a little more movement to the top of the dress (a request of my pro). I think I can just attach it to one shoulder/back, but...which side? left or right? I am thinking left, correct?
 
Since the arms are in hold and cannot move during standard dancing I would put on the right because it is able to move more. His arm is around your left side.
 
OK, so I know that the point of the comp video is to see our dancing, but the first thing that struck me on looking at our latest one is that my skirt was less poofy than everyone else's. So I ordered some horsehair braid that just came yesterday. I've put horsehair on before, but only folded over, and this time I want it exposed, both for look and because this dress could use a bit of added length. Two questions: 1) with exposed horsehair, do you do anything with the raw edges to avoid fraying/scratching? And 2) this dress already has fishing line in the hems. Will it work OK to have both, or should I remove the fishing line?

Yes, looks like a chiffon-y drape on the right shoulder and arm that doesn't extend much past the elbow, eliminating the risk of getting caught or grabbed whilst making hand connections.

I don't know about the fishing line. I put crinoline on the black skirt I made for my paso showcase and it is a flattened tube so having the edge exposed was fine.

I got it from EEAGAL trims in LA - ordered by phone and had it in a couple of days - 36 yards at approx. $1 per yard for 2" crinoline, IIRC (I could be slightly off on the cost and quantity). I have some left that I am going to use on my new latin costume.
 
Thanks! I went ahead and started adding it along with the fishing line, and it seems fine -- I bet it adds extra curl, which is a good thing.
