Standard Geekery

Went to a competition yesterday. Lady Leader as the am in pro-am Standard competition. Upside: WOO HOO LADY LEAD. Downside: her pro partner was visibly and annoyingly backleading.

Ma'am. JUST STOP. Let her learn!

I had the chance to thank her for holding up the side for Women Who LIke To Lead Standard. She told me she'd started after her teacher said she needed to understand more of the Lead's side in order to follow well.

um. yeah.

If that was the City's Dancesport Challenge, I believe that was me. And thank you for all your encouragement and kind words. This was my 1st comp as Lead, and I gladly accepted the help, but the goal is to be able to lead. I also led Latin with a different Lady Pro. Both Pros very encouraging. We put together 6 routines in 4 months. Eventually plan to dance/compete all 10 International as Lead. At present I dance/compete10 International as Follow, at Silver. Will now dance both Lead and Follow.

And again, thank you for your encouragement. It made my day!

Yup. ‘'Twas I. Or me. Or whatever. Well, Hi!

I hope you saw me applauding for you as well as when I came up and spoke to you.

Let's hear it for Lady Leads!

It is indeed hard to lead the teacher who can backlead like nobody's business. Teach is an awe-inspiring backleader. I find myself playing Stump Teach when he's being my follow -- not that it works much. I'm not that good a lead, so I'll send him a signal too soon or too late for him to follow it, or I'll depart from the grouping I choreographed just in case I take the exam, or I'll revise that choreo b/c I want it my way...

In time honored tradition, I blame him for not following me.

@Reach, you can lead me any time!

Delighted to hear this!

In the Bend-to-Move thread, I wrote:

I had long conversations with dance geek friends years ago, when this discussion was called move-to-lower rather than move-to-bend, but the philosophy seems the same. The MTL people are 100% convinced that it is easier than LTM. Don't dispute that. But where do you come from, when you're moving to lower? Do you start from a standstill? Or do you do the prep steps so you'll have somewhere to come from? And what are the results? What result do you want? How do you get it?

IMHO, both MTB and BTM are about Commence. How do you move without Commence? And now I'll post this response on the Standard Geekery thread, too, b/c Commence is a Very Big Deal and from what I observe, nowadays a custom more breached than observed.

People move without starting to move? That's a nice trick. Or is there something specific you think happens when starting to move - note, different from "commence to turn" etc.

This is my point. People try to move without starting to move -- or they don't, which is, I imagine, why somebody invented the so-called prep step.

Shape your body well, and it will invite you to move. Commence to rise, commence to turn, commence to go into CBMP, but please commence.

I think you would very much appreciate one of the ideas I got from Smooth Master last time. Summarized, he essentially advocated using so strong a Commencement that you need to work to hold back from taking the step!
