I thought Slavik and Hannah's Rumba was beautiful; their best number. They tried to get a little funky at times in their Cha Cha. Not sure how well that suits Hannah. There were a lot of Standard fans in the audience and Arunas and Katusha were very much appreciated. Katusha was beautiful as always esp. wearing her white gown for Waltz! They announced that Katusha has just become an American citizen!
They mentioned there was an after party. I didn't know about it in advance and didn't have any dance shoes with me so I didn't go. I should have been prepared. Gotta leave a pair of shoes in my trunk at all times.
OK, I'll be nice. Champ Standard started from a quarter final. This is my best recollection of the results:
1. Andrew & Angelica
2. Vasyl & Grace
3. Andzelika Dechnik and Marek Klepadlo
4. Sasha Tchernossitov and Regina Maziarz
5. Alex & Kat
6. Xingmin & Katerina
7. Kani & Anya
I left before the Latin results were announced.
The show was AWESOME!!! Actually, so was the whole event.
Many photos will follow, though not for awhile as we just got home from Jersey.
CCP, who has been feeling sick since Ohio, was SO glad he decided to go. He declared the samba "the best samba I've ever seen" and the Viennese waltz "the best Viennese waltz I've ever seen."
I also liked the samba the best, but the rumba was a close second.
A brief report:
1st number was Slavik and Hanna's cha-cha to "Respect." I thought it was clean and basic and a nice beginning, though clearly not the flashiest number of the night.
2nd number Arunas and Katusha's tango. She was wearing black. Beautifully danced. I've heard this song a number of times and it reminds me of the "Twelve Monkeys" theme, but I'm 99% sure it is NOT that. (Probably someone who dances standard can actually ID it.)
3rd number was Slavik and Hanna's samba. LOVED THIS. The music was super unusual. It sounded like someone popping his cheek, someone playing the spoons, someone maybe hitting a wood block--not conventional instrumentation. It fit their samba perfectly. Each muscle, movement, pulse of the samba seemed to fit the music. This number was the most unique of the night from my perspective and I would love to see it again. Hannah wore a gorgeous yellow number.
4th number was Arunas and Katusha's Viennese waltz. She wore a beautiful white gown. It was a very romantic and tender Viennese; I'm seeming to recall a part where they were cupping each other's faces.
5th number was Slavik and Hanna's jive. The song might have been called "Oh What a Night It Really Was." He was wearing suspenders and played with them at the beginning of the song, looping them over his head She came out wearing a leopard jacket and sunglasses, underneath which was a turquoise dress, fringed I think. He left the floor wearing her jacket.
6th number was Arunas and Katusha's foxtrot to the theme from "Love Story." She was wearing a very pale pink dress with ruffly things on it. Someone who knows gowns can no doubt describe it much better. Romantic and sweet.
7th number was Slavik and Hanna's rumba. It got a standing ovation. It was a number that told a story of heartbreak and longing but not being able to make it work. The song included the lyrics "I loved you then" but I can't ID it.
8th number was Arunas and Katusha's quickstep to "Flash! Bam! Alakazam!" (which I'm sure is not spelled that way, but you know what I mean). It had this cool jitterbug part at the end and Arunas was really breaking out and going wild. Katusha wore an apple green dress.
9th number was Slavik and Hanna's paso, and I think this actually was to the theme from "Twelve Monkeys." It was abstract and really interesting! Liked it a lot.
10th number was Arunas and Katusha's waltz. The song had the line "Canta la musica" in it. (And I don't seem to have written anything else down.)
The audience clearly loved the show!
