Tango Diaries

Good question!
I find encuentros to be conservative and was simply looking for a contrasting term.
Although Melina Sedó did explain in a fb post that encuentros are a relatively recent development in the tango scene and therefore progressive, and neo parties are conservative.

From my point of view they're both essentially retro in their own way, so I'm not sure why I am getting the impression that a feud exists.

Besides festivals, encuentros, and marathons, there are other formats such as tango vacations and tango camps. The camps, in particular, are aimed at families, as they offer childcare.

Of course, not everyone greeted everyone else, let alone danced with everyone else.
I just got back from Tango Feast, which is always one of the friendliest festivals. The venue made a mistake and double-booked the weekend, so the festival had to change weekends at fairly short notice. That meant it was smaller than usual, with about 160 participants. I think it came remarkably close to everyone dancing with everyone! ❤️

To me they all the same. Go somewhere for x number of days exclusively focused on tango.
Yes, there's a focus in tango - that's what you're paying for. Some I've seen also involve 'wellness', or yoga (IMHO avoid!). The ones I've been on have also involved wine-tasting, exploring the region, and good food. Time is made available for other activities. They also tend to be longer duration.

Instructional courses (bootcamps?) tend to be more intense - but with time off.

Marathons, festivals, etc tend to be more concentrated in a shorter time (e.g. weekend). Sure, you can arrive early and leave later to make it a 'holiday'.

The context was not the number of days, Bailango, but whether you showed up alone, or with your regular dance partner, the replacement dance partner, your life partner, or your affair.
If someone shows up with a “partner”, as long as it is for dancing, it hardly matters which of the category a “partner” falls into. Hardly matters or doesn’t matter to the others who are there to dance.

If the “partner” is a tag along and doesn’t dance, against won’t matter to those there for dancing :)

I just lost my DJ gig (was there once a month since 4 years). I said a few choice words to the organizer and I was fired. Incidentally, I had dancers who drove 80km to be at my sets. But organizers are like little gods. I'm still not sure if fighting back was the right thing to do. There are so many up-and-coming DJs, inflating supply and demand. Perhaps it was time for me to step back.

That's too bad. I know a couple of guys who had a falling out with their organizer and later worked for someone else. One was the late Michel Auzat. The other was Guy the Irishman. The organizer was Santiago.

If DJ-ing is something that brings you joy, maybe you could try looking for a different organizer.
