Well, the way I do it, it is. However, I never had any real classes.
Yes, doing is the best way to learn . . . . . tango.
So here's A Media Luz as we're into lyrics
.........................................................
A Media Luz
In Half Light
3-4-8 Corrientes Street,
second floor, elevator.
There are no doormen or neighbors,
inside, cocktails and love...
A little flat furnished in maple,
A piano, a mat and a nightstand;
a telephone to answer,
a victrola that cries
old tangos of my youth,
and a cat that's made of porcelain
so it won't meow at love.
And all in half light...
For love is a wizard!
In half light the kisses,
In half light the two of us.
And all in half light,
twilight inside...
What soft velvet,
the half light of love!
12-24 Juncal Street,
call without fear;
In the afternoon, tea with pastries;
at night, tango and song.
On Sundays, a tea dance;
on Mondays, desolation.
The little house has everything:
cushions and sofas;
and like a drugstore... coke!
Carpets that make no sound
and a table set for love.
...........................................
Not so miserable is it?
Sort of compliments AndaBien's quote too.
I actually think it's easily forgotten that
original tango music was indeed instrumental.
Even La Cumparsita's lyrics were added later.
And to begin with singers only sang perhaps
on the last quarter or third of the tune. Then along
came tango to listen to and of course singers
sang virtually the whole piece. But mainly it seems
it wasn't music for dancing.
I still prefer mainly instrumental pieces, that way
it's dancing to the music, the rhythm and the melody.
Dancing to lyrics is beyond us anyway.
Even if I did understand castellano and lunfardo,
I for one have no connection to BsAs culture and history.
Soon if not already, native dancers in BsAs will have
little connection to the music lyrics either. It's history
and time moves on. It's easy to get carried away
and put far too deep meaning into things.
I shall disappoint Mario now by saying that I'm quite
happy to dance to non-tango music as long as there's
something to hook up to. No over-bearing laid over
the top non-tango rhythms please. But it is different
and the resultant dance is different, well it is for me.
