Tango in times of pandemic

I know the situation in Germany now is difficult, my daughter who lives in Hamburg tells me. In the New York metro area (not Manhattan) Tango life is more normal.

On July 5th, 2020 we started dancing in an outdoor Milonga. In October we moved indoors and have been dancing ever since. That is 8 months altogether. So far no one got infected in the Milongas (that is true also for the other 2 Milongas in the area). We dance with everyone...

Call us lucky, or perhaps the virus fear is worse than the virus itself. Most of us are now vaccinated.

I'm steaming with envy!!! Not that in NY metro area the incidence is lower than in Germany :mad:

Oh, I do, especially as our government just makes stuff up on a whim while claiming to 'follow the science.' I have the rapid test kits and use them, I just like to be informed about what the results do and don't tell me.

New York State, 19m people, 6795 new cases yesterday.

But it is in Germany that the situation is difficult? WTF?

Yeah, definitely not Manhattan. Also, most of the dance studios are still closed.

It's not the statistics, it's the politicians who "know" everything and make decisions that impact your life.

Let's calculate a bit with the figures:
Sensitivity: 96,52% => false negatives 3,48% = safer 100/3,48 = 29x
Specificity: 99,68% => false positives 0,32%

Germany: cases/1w/100k = 70, +5x(?) in the dark => 6x70/100k = 420/100k = 0,42%
Each Infectous for 3,5d = 0,5w => infectious (every day) = 0,21% real positives
Loss by Sensitivity: 0,21% * 0,9652 = 0,20% detected positives

Advantage: infectious reduced by 96,52%, 29x more safe than not, instead with 1 you can dance with 29 others at the same risk.
Disadvantage: more false positives (0,32%) than detected positives (0,20%)
 
The false positives could be overcome by having a 2nd type of rapid test available. Those few who test positive are given the second test and turned away if it also is positive.
 
Unless I'm traveling, which covid has currently curtailed, I usually dance in New York City - Manhattan. I just found out that there is a milonga in Paramus, New Jersey. Another state but only about 45 minutes - maybe an hour & a 1/2 away. The organizer's previous milongas in NYC weren't my favorite - but I'm thinking "any port in a storm". They will take temperatures at the door, provide masks & hand sanitizer. I have KN95 masks, face shields & latex gloves. I survived a "mild" covid infection in the summer & had gotten both doses of the Moderna vax in February. I'm almost more worried about my loss of dance skills with over a year of absence from the dance floor, than I am about reinfection in what will probably be a very sparsely attended milonga.

I'm on the fence. Am I being prematurely optimistic?

You are referring to Jon Tariq's Milonga in Paramus. There are two more weekly Milongas in NJ - in Leonia and in Maywood. They were going on since June and July 2020. My wife and I regularly attend the one in Leonia (next to GW bridge) and periodically in Maywood.

I find it interesting that you've been vaccinated that shortly after you've gone through the infection. I was told that I should wait with a vaccination until the anti-body-level is beyond the detection limit, otherwise there might be a risk of complications.
Was the Moderna vax you've got against a new variant of Cov compared to the strain that you had in 2020?
