Tango Wedding Dance?

How about this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7CxE1KxCTw

Häätango means "Wedding Tango". Teach the happy couple something - anything - they can do without falling on their backsides and call it Finnish tango. Who will say it isn't? If any actual Finns are present, with any luck they will be too polite or too drunk to say anything.

same as anything else, a poor choice comes from mediocrity, lack of discernment and kitsch
Knowing what you like and dislike doesn't mean that it applies to anyone else. If they like it, then it would be a good choice for them.

One thing I have observed is that when this version of the song is played at milongas, people get up and dance to it.

in a wedding dance, they may want "the flashy stuff" - at least a lunge, and maybe a few other movements. And as we all know, doing those movements takes time.

They're also pretty difficult in a floor length gown. ;)

(and I'm not so sure about being able to learn walking and posture in an hour... I'm still working on both!)

yeah but then yuo can argue if you like something its okay to play and dance to at our wedding.from Ride of the valkyires..which would have a bit more zest than Por un Cabeza
and a Ming vase is worth no more than an ikea one or a Rembrandt or a Monet is just as good as the amateur bloke who got some oil paints for xmas....

it just becomes BS. it just devalues everything....

Oh please... arrogant much?

As long as the couple has a good time at their wedding and is able to look back on it with happy memories later in life, nothing they choose is a poor choice... for THEM. They aren't choosing for judgmental strangers on the internet.

Just because something has value to you, doesn't mean it has value to any one else. I wouldn't walk across the street to look at a Monet painting, but I'm aware that some people really like his stuff. If some amateur's painting touches you, then buying it might not be a poor choice.

The crayon sketch a deceased child gave his Mom is more valuable to her than an expensive painting. Recognizing something that carries special sentiment (like a couple's favorite song) does not devalue anything. Perhaps couples should do their wedding dance to a "superior" piece of music like Beethoven's 5th symphony.. ALL of it.

And since most of us can't afford Monets and Mings, are you suggesting that we should not have any decorative objects in our house? Or that the bloke who got some paints for Christmas shouldn't use them? Or perhaps that anyone who isn't world class should leave the milonga right now because they aren't "good enough" for your standards?

Oh never mind... I know you only post this BS to rile people up. :p

if, as one couple did, you asked me to choreograph a wedding dance for them in a month to Por Una Cabeza, i said politley no; they werent even coming to the regular classes.

i agree with you about childrens sketches, Zoops

but then why have a forum at all?

Are you baiting me, BTM? ;)

I see the appreciation of art (and taste, or whatever you want to call preferences) on three levels:

Expert Opinion: the consens opinion of art historians/professional artists; musicologist/professional musicians, etc

Popular Opinion: what is most popular, easily measured by ratings or dollars

Individual Opinion: the most important one of all - what an individual likes or dislikes.

If a couple wants to dance to Ride of the Valkryies, go ahead. I'd like to see that one! They should pick music they both enjoy listening to and get someone to choreograph something. They are not going to learn to improvise tango with no previous experience.

Are you speaking of contemporary (lifetime of the artist) "expert" opinion or how history will judge?

The obvious example of Van Gogh comes to mind.

If someone's art crosses over all 3 categories, is that the true test of "art"?

If someone is wildly popular with the masses (as is Van Gogh today) does that discount the value of "expert" opinion?

Do people need to understand WHY a popular artist is held in high esteem by experts for their preference for that artist to "count"?

How do you rank legitimate and historically important artists whose work is inflated due to popularity (like Van Gogh)

And then there's the Beatles....

It's almost impossible to define "art" in any meaningful way. No matter how expert someone is, their view is still subjective. The only test that probably has much objective validity is how much or in what direction an artist influences what comes after them. (which is why Van Gogh is not just a popular artist). Then it becomes an analysis of history, rather than of the art itself.

Everything else is just someone's opinion... even if they are an expert.

It seems this conversation has drifted over to one that was being addressed in another thread... Is the actual topic of this thread about the artistic merit of weding dance choices, or the practicality of the way wedding dances are approached?

At least he only baited you. I couldn't resist the bait and got hooked, and reeled in. I'm done playing though (at least for today).
