The long-term solution is dual-role dancing?

Taboe Tango Camp" and "PhantasTango" immediately spring to my mind. I attended a "Theatro Tango" workshop once and noticed that some people feel the need to roll around on the floor while dancing. Yes, I was in a relationship with a yoga teacher for a few years, and I had performed in a pool with my partner at an aqua yoga retreat.
Yeah, but isn't it all just a little weird? And a reason to avoid?

On the one hand we have cries of 'tradition'; on the other melding it with, well, something. Fine if you want to do Tai Chi, Yoga, theatre performance, whatever. But do they have to merge with AT?

I do tend to avoid the 'wellness' freaks looking for some spiritual dimension or hidden meaning in AT rather than just dancing and the social aspects. You don't have to drag all the extra spiritual baggage in to justify it!

That’s really a lot weird. Doesn’t mean there aren’t people who like weird stuff :D

Perhaps people have too much time on their hand or have a big void in their life they are trying to fill.

This! I too stay away from them. When I hear them talk, I want to run away as fast as possible.

I don’t know. People have baggage and they think unloading it means doing all the weird stuff.

Such events have been around for a long time...
No one here has traveled as much as you. No one knows the different formats and their acceptance as well as you do. Nobody has as many contacts as you. Nobody has analyzed as much as you: So, isn't it time to change sides? Where do you see yourself in two years, my friend?

I'm not against 'weird', if that's your thing. AT is 'weird' to some!
Perhaps people have too much time on their hand or have a big void in their life they are trying to fill.
That's certainly true. For some it is an AT-shaped void and AT finds them. And we all bring our baggage with us, as did those early migrants to Argentina. But it doesn't have to meld together to something else. Fortunately, then, it got us AT, but it could have been something else.

Still not seeing any of these suggestions as any 'solution' to what I see as social AT's issue: getting and keeping men (leaders) in social AT. I see most of the suggestions as scaring a majority away!

Theatre actually makes sense, interpreting the music is related to acting. Also the mindnumbingly boring AT performances could be better if the dancers incorporated theatrical concepts.

No sense whatsoever for social AT - unless you're playing a role.

However the early AT performances of the 1920's, and later of the 1970's, 80's, 90's were theatrical. And people wanted to learn to dance like that, taking lessons with the performers. Even now I went to a small theatre performance with live 'AT music' (not Piazolla!) and some dance performance, but not really inspired by either (some exceptions for the dance). Neither was the large lady next to us who said BsAs performances were a lot better.

Is there a reason why these events in the videos appeal to a lot of middle-aged and above dancers?
Don't appeal to me - well above 'middle age', or maybe I've just got there!

But some could attribute it to searching for something more in life once you've had enough years at the grindstone.

Like 'born-again' bikers or MAMILs who can now afford their expensive tech.

Every time you're trying to convey emotion through the music you're playing a role, and if you dance to the lyrics you're playing a character.

It's semantics all the way down; but for my part, the music and lyrics evoke feelings and emotions and thoughts, which I want to convey and express. Would you call improvised jazz on a theme an expression of self or acting/playing a role?

I'm not doing a theme-based performance on Strictly/DWTS (and those, apparently, have plenty of negative criticism)! But I agree we all play a role. It's about the extent.

Many don't speak sufficient Spanish to understand the lyrics - or where they come from.

Yes, there certainly are some who play a character - the equivalent of the Dandy Men, or Sapeurs. Their choice, but not an absolute necessity.

I would say I'm expressing the emotions I feel in response to the song. So it's not acting, whereas it would be if I were trying to express the emotions I felt the singer or composer wanted to express.

I view it as acting because a sad feeling evoked by music is transient, and further if i want to convey this to my partner then I need to express it through the body instead of just experiencing it as an internal process.
