Traffic declining?

Better not to feed the trolls, as anyone who dances AT in depth will know exactly why they are not the same genre no matter else we may or may not agree on....no need to preach to the choir.... (not dissing any other dances, as I have done most of them by now and have a healthy respect for them, but just sayin'....)

Agreed. No feedin' the trolls. ;)

Trolls? *blinking faux innocently*

And back to the thread of conversation that's not actually the topic posted by the OP ...

I love this quote of sixela's from above.

sixela said:
A follower with perfect technique and an infinite supply of trust plus familiarity with all the possible elements in the dance...

Aren't we being a bit too demanding? We aren't dancing with the Platonic ideal of a follower, and I'm sure none of us is the Platonic ideal of a leader either .

<snip>

If absolutely everything was to be led, then all followers would in theory be interchangeable, and there would be no room for interpretation at all. Yet no two followers are alike, and the main difference is the way they respond to the lead or influence it. That's interpretation, and the fine line between interpretation and not following isn't one you can unambiguously draw in the sand.

Yes, they are different, but they are still in the same genre of dance. Think about how many different types of swing there is -- and yet there is one forum for all swings.
You are entitled to your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more.

one reason I hesitate to post here is that sometimes the discussion devolves into silly semantic arguments. When, in response to music style preference at milongas, I stated my preference for golden age tango, I got a snarky response (by the OP, no less) about how golden age is a period not a style, and how the golden age had different styles, as if I didn't know that. If exchanging ideas gets exasperating, people will do less of it.

Amen and hallelujah. Not sure why some folks seem to think that being "right," whatever that is, encourages exchange of ideas.

Two things. 1) Who the hell knows what is right? The golden age of tango was a long time ago. How can anyone alive now possibly know exactly how things were then? And 2) Even if we somehow magically knew what happened during the golden age, who's to say that that's the best or the only way to tango?

Yes. The hair splitting, quite frankly, is why I don't do AT. There's a milonga around the corner from where I work, every Friday night. It's close, it's accessible and it's cheap. But I have absolutely no desire to encounter the self-aggrandizement and inflexibility there that I sometimes see here. It's not about DF, though. Back in my early days in DF, I did a ton of research on other dance sites, including many AT sites. The, "I have the Holy Grail of Tango and you're a heretic" attitude is pervasive, IMHO. I've seen it in a lot of online AT communities. The irony is that the people who are so passionate about preserving tango in its pristine historical form can sometimes be the ones who prevent new, interested people from joining the community. At least in my case, I know that is true.

OK, I'll bite on the tasty bait. Why do you post in the AT forum if you don't like AT or the people who do AT?

I didn't say that or even attempt to suggest it. I love AT. I like most of the people who dance and discuss AT. As I've said in other threads in the AT forum in the past, there is a handful of folks whom I perceive poison the well for the many. To me, this is directly related to the topic of why traffic in this forum has declined.

Not sure why it sounded to you like I was dissing everything and everybody, but you have my sincerest apologies, especially if you felt I was referring to you, which I was not. *shrug*

It seems that I misunderstood/overreacted to your post.

Sorry.

There is a lot of truth in it, what you wrote. But I hope, that people that misuse this (or any other) forum are still the minority on the dance floor.

My slogan, anyway: "there is nothing more modern than traditional tango" :rocker:

I hope so too, which is why I drive reeeallly slowly past the milonga venue, every Friday on my way home from work. One of these Fridays, I suspect my car will drive into the car park and stop. :-D
