Why does nobody tell me these exciting things?

I just got an mass e-mail from Mark Nocera, saying that Eastern Dancesport 2011 will be available over the internet: day sessions for free, night sessions pay-per-view. :) :) :)

He also said that if you want to see the service, they are also broadcasting USDSC's evening sessions!!!

So I went to starstreamers dot com, and sure enough!

I am not planning to attend USDSC this year (religious holiday conflict makes it difficult), but will DEFINITELY be checking out the pay-per-view. It looks like it is $9.95/night.

Do you mean EUSDSC?

ETA: As to "why does nobody tell me?" -- Well, didn't Mark Nocera tell you? :)

heh, always love the confusion caused by all the names for this comp.

That being said, very cool, thanks CCM!

There is an Eastern USDC (EUSDC), and that's what I thought the reference was in the original post -- but in any case I looked it up and stand corrected.

I wasn't blaming you DL. I've been fighting with confusion on this one as long as I've been dancing, and I still get it wrong at times.

Lol! True. I thought maybe this was going to be one of those things where everyone dancing at USDSC (which is in about 3 weeks) has known this for months, and I am therefore The Last to Know. ;)
[Had a somewhat embarrassing one of those at work a few months ago. Asked a colleague if she was saving the seat next to her at this dinner for her husband. They were in the process of divorcing. Oh. Oops. Awkward.]

To clarify my post (which I think is pretty clear, but has apparently caused some confusion), BOTH USDSC 2010 (Orlando, September) and Eastern 2011 (Boston, February) are going to be broadcast via starstreamers.

Mark Nocera definitely mentioned that with HIS comp (Eastern), day sessions will be available free, and the nights will be PPV.

With USDSC, I know the night sessions are available PPV, and have no information one way or another about the day sessions.

Thanks for the info!

I've never used a PPV streaming video service. How is the quality in general?

What's the comp we tried to watch where they just plonked the camera down in one place, a place distant from the floor - and there was no sound? It was pretty recent. Dancebeat did a video stream of Embassy maybe 5 - 6 years ago (the year Karina & Slavik split up), and that was fair quality.

I think this is new enough that it is hard to say.

Blackpool was offered ppv in 2008 (I think). It was hard to log on, and a lot of us missed the first webcast because of that. Once you got on, though, the quality was EXCELLENT, crystal clear sound and audio. There was even a discussion panel. They definitely treated it as a true webcast.

Both Philly Festival and Yankee Classic were offered free of charge this year, and I applaud both comps for experimenting with it. Yes, as casey indicated above, there is some way to go. With Philly, the sound came through great, but the picture sometimes locked up, at least from where I was watching. With Yankee, the sound quality was not good (possibly camera too close to speakers?) and the picture pixellated and jerky. The camera was situated behind the audience, and I could see people at the tables in better focus than the dancers. And as casey indicated, there were times where the camera did not seem to be manned, and thus did not move (though at other times, it did seem manned). My guess is that both comps were probably experimenting to see what the interest level was. My guess is that if they were charging $9.95/viewer for a night session and got 100 or more viewers, they could upgrade the product.

I don't think $9.95 is at all high if the quality is at least medium good, meaning the audio is audible and not painful to listen to and the video flows continuously without locking up. When you see a movie in a movie theater, tickets are usually $7.50/person @ matinee, and more like $9/person @ evening shows. Hey, I wouldn't even have to charge myself absurd prices for a snack!

I'm going to give it a try.

CCM, care for a viewing party? Since you're at least in my neighborhood... it'll be like watching the Superbowl for us :D
Hmm I wonder how fast my internet has to be to stream videos... all I ever do is email and websurf, so I have the cheap DSL from Verizon.
