I noticed the same thing about the numbers, and I have three thoughts:
1) I do NOT think it was as well-publicized as it could have been. Since I have an NDCA membership, I routinely get brochures from comps that I have never attended which are trying to increase attendance. As a USA Dance member, I get e-mail blasts about qualifier comps and USA Dance members appearing on tv. I think either a mass mailing or an email blast would increase viewership. (Ironically, since the NDCA makes amateurs register, but not pro-ammers, I imagine they do not have a complete e-mail/US mail database. But that is not a suggestion that pro-ammers should have to register!!! I'll bet there are other ways to get a more complete database.)
2) I wonder if that ticker was accurate. At one of the other comps that had a webcast, the MC gave a shout-out to those of us watching at home and said that hundreds were watching...but the number on the ticker was also only two digits. So is the ticker accurately counting households? I will also say that at Casa ChaCha, more than one person was watching at some points...though I'm the only one who was foolish enough to stay up until 2 AM on Friday night!
3) It seems like a lot of people were wary about quality and reluctant to commit $9.95 until they were sure the quality would be there. Well, several of us can now speak to the quality of StarStreamers product. With endorsements and good word of mouth, will interest spread?
[P.S. I will also say that while I would give this excellent word of mouth, the Blackpool one in--I think 2008?--was even crisper. I wonder what that company did differently?]
Mind you, I would always rather be at a competition, because I like to cheer LOUDLY for my favorite couples, and I know they cannot hear me all the way from Maryland! It's also fun to make a night of it with my spouse. But time, schedule conflicts, and budget keep many of us from attending every single comp that interests us. So StarStreamers could position itself as the next best thing to being there!
I also have to say the re*fresh*ment menu at home was excellent. Locally-grown farm fresh greens, locally-grown yellow and red grape tomatoes, craisins, and crumbled feta with balsamic vinegar. Mmmm! CCP also reports that the line at the bar was much shorter.
