weight for arm strength

If they are weights that wrap around, try wrapping them just above the elbow this will remove the stress from the triceps and transfer it to the shoulders and back.

I am never one to encourage movement with weights attached, i think it is very difficult not to compromise form...I would encourage that you strengthen all the muscle groups of your arms in addition to your dance time...but not during your dance time...as well as your back....

I would agree completely, any weight training should be done in addition to your regular dance practice.

I have never heard any of my students complaining tricep pain...
You must be holding wrong.

And as far as placing the weights above elbows, I wouldn't recommend it because then you would be focusing on just holding the weights up (and ignore the elbow-wrist) whereas placing them on wrist" holding weights" and "holding arms" is the same thing.
Besides, placing them that high up your arm will diminsh the whole point of the excercise cause it's too easy. It's like doing crunches in your bed...

Also agree with previous posters that all work on the muscles should't be done INSTEAD of dancing but BESIDES dancing if you have the time for it.

Keeping your arms up in frame is a matter of endurance and muscle memory, not strength. If I can military press my own weight, that doesn't keep my arms from dropping in frame if I haven't got that as a good habit.

well...I disagree a tad....endurance is a matter of strength to some extent with regard to being able to hold the arms up for a long period of time...however, that is not what is usually required at a comp....unless you consider 12 minutes or so to be daunting...and I agree that muscle memory is important in term of how one holds one's arms for that duration

It's a kind of strength. But I think using weights to try to build endurance for staying in a relatively static position is counterproductive, as the key thing is to develop the right habits, reinforcing the corresponding neural pathways, and practicing with weights will mess with the proprioception when weights are not being used.
