That is correct.Maybe I misunderstood, but isn't the whole point of the FM transmitter/radio system so that the partners aren't attached by any wires?

I believe its the difference between some of the "wireless" headphones that and the "real" FM transmitter/receiver set described here.
The range on most wireless headphone sets I've tried is only 2-3 feet. This would probably work in standard (but then again, so would a simple y-splitter. In Latin/Rhythm/Smooth any open, but still connected figure (Fan for instance tends to kill them) would probably fail, let along any completely separated figure.
The FM transmitter/receiver I tried (quite a while ago) was probably closer to 15 feet, typically more than enough for most routines (theatre arts/showdance probably would still have issues unless you had a very strong base station)
