Ran into a student from my old studio on Saturday working with current pro. She needs jewelry for the upcoming comp, but "can't she get a special discount?? It's not in my budget". ARGH!

That was my old studio, I met you once 7 years ago and I get, "Can't I just borrow some stuff for the comp. Can't you loan me something it would be great exposure for you?" No, it's a business and it costs me to "loan" new jewelry and at best be able to sell in at used prices.

I'm continually astounded at people's willingness to unashamedly ask for exceptions and special favors, particularly the sense of entitlement that comes with it. Sometimes I wonder if I'm a fool for not just joining them in that endeavor.

You must have a lot of jewelry!
Pretty much. And I've always been that way. There's a picture of me at an extremely young age, with ropes of necklaces around my neck and piles of jewelry around me. My brother's then girlfriend is in the picture, I think she had given me some of her cast-offs. From the expression of my face, I loved it.

It doesn't matter what kind of jewelry it is, either. I like handmade jewelry, especially by a select few artisans. I can also make jewelry myself, but mostly now that's limited to earrings and repairs of things when needed.

I also like costume jewelry. One of my favorite necklaces is a dual strand lavender/amethyst bead necklace that I bought for $5 on the clearance rack at JC Penney's. I bought a pair of coordinating earrings at JC Penney's, disassembled them, and made two pair of light-weight earrings to go with the necklace.

I also like Swarovski crystal, either the regular brand or their direct sales brand. Some of these are over 25 years old. I have a light rose/rose set and a crystal/jet set that I wore at my first dance competition, and they look just as good now as when I first wore them.

And I have some jewelry that I've bought at dance events. I have to say, I've been disappointed in the workmanship of some of this. I have a Siam choker and bracelet, that I had to make repairs every time after I wore it.

Well, the horde just got bigger. Elderly family member went through her jewelry box and gave me several pieces. Included were two costume jewelry pins missing stones. I cleaned up the pins with a jewelry cloth, filled the holes with glue on the end of a toothpick, then replaced the stones. I was fortunate I had on hand stones that were an exact match for the missing stones. The pins are good as new.

I have so much costume jewelry, some from my mother, which makes it vintage and/or antique, and my own stuff. I don't want to store it or move it or throw it away or keep it in any form.

It's my intention to wear at least some of it, especially the pins. I'm not sure about wearing clip earrings, but I'll give it a go. Really, it's not that much jewelry, that it's too much trouble to take care of and store.

Whereas my the jewelry I have from my mother is largely modern and snazzier than what I had--except for things she gave me! I used to just stop by her house to accessorize, and always got complements on the pieces of hers. I also have older antique items that were originally my great grandmother's or great-great aunts!
