Whining Thread #2

Oh car trouble why have you forsaken me. It's fun enough getting bent over at the pumps and asking for another whoopin, but now car issues too. Can we just skip ahead to the flying cars, teleportation, or mass public transit?

Whine. Whine. Whine.

The Purr household received an automated call from Giant Eagle informing us that someone in the household had bought Jif extra crunchy peanut butter that was potentially subject to a recall for salmonella. I checked the lot numbers online, and sure enough, the 2 extra large jars were part of the recall. I have my receipt, and I'm returning the 2 jars to Giant Eagle.

Sadly, both elderly family member and I had already eaten 1 small sandwich made with peanut butter from one of the jars. We wondered why we didn't feel so good afterward. I guess now we know.

And second whine from the weekend.

Did you know that windows have weep holes? Basically, there's little slots at the bottom, that allows for any rain that accumulates inside the window to run off.

Me neither.

I discovered Saturday morning a big puddle on the sill of my living room window, and wet carpet below the window. Further investigation showed the well between the glass pane and screen was full of water.

After much consternation and swearing, I finally figured out that 1) weep holes existed and 2) the weep holes were clogged. I cleaned out the weep hole trough with an ice pick. A gusher of water drained out of the window well.

Problem solved.

I should clarify that this is a temporary fix. The window in question is over 23 years old, and is quite drafty. That window takes the brunt of most storms blowing through. I have to put plastic up inside the window during the winter. I was going to replace it, and the other windows in the house next year. After a lot of thought, I'm moving that project up to this year. More than likely, there's some water or other damage around the window. I'm also concerned about possible mold.

Here's an update on the windows. I'm under contract for new windows, and a technician is coming in a few days to take measurements. Installation will be sometime in the fall, before winter. The price was a little bit of a sticker shock, and I'm not thrilled with the lag time for the installation, but it is what it is. The house needs new windows, and I'm not messing around getting it done.

Ah, the joys of being a homeowner. I laugh sometimes at what I've had to have done:

- replace HVAC
- replace hot water tank
- replace washer and dryer, twice
- replace refrigerator
- replace kitchen flooring
- replace flooring in one bathroom
- replace great room carpeting
- additional ceiling insulation throughout entire house
- replace sinks and faucets in bathrooms
- replace vanity top in one bathroom
- replace kitchen faucet
- replace garbage disposal below kitchen sink
- replace garage door and garage door opener
- roof repair on the sunroom
- replace ceiling fan in bedroom
- replace dining room light fixture

And so it is. And I'm not done yet. A bathroom remodel and kitchen refresh are also on the horizon.

Ah, but you've lived long enough to enjoy it. And dance:)
