World Pro Am Championship Category

I notice that comps recently have a category called "world Pro Am Championship" that is different from the scholarship events. Could someone explain what this is? Just a fancy category? Was at a recent comp where all you got if you were placed was one of those 1st, 2nd 3rd discs. No money, no trophy, no line up. What's the point of this category?

pnoisette, care to give an example of a comp that has this? Perhaps it might spark and explanation?

This year Ohio Star Ball had the official NDCA sanctioned "World Pro Am Championship" titles.

How does this relate to the World Pro-Am championship sactioned by WDC being put on in Bahamas by World promotions?

I'm pretty sure that World Promotions ran the World Pro/Am Champs thing in Argentina last year.

It's getting to be like boxing -- different organizations running their own World Championships. :)

Years back there was the same thing with Miss America - then this was upstaged by Miss World then Miss Universe and finally Miss Scranton (ok, I made the last one up). I suppose we will see the same thing for pro/am - the moremoney in something the more absurd it gets....

Yeah Laura, but I believe Larinda said in another thread that they were moving it every two years and that it'd been in argentina for 2 yeras now, so it may vry well be in bahamas next. Hrmm, wonder if I can dig up money for that. :)

I am Still in the Dark

So what do these World Pro Ams mean? Do you get to compete in their <whoever the sponsors are> in say the Bahamas? Are these categories supposed to demonstrate a different level of dancing? Why would anyone enter these categories an way?

Unlike the world pro am entries at OSB, the competition linked is actually attended by a lot more people from around the world.

The world Pro Am in the Bahamas is sanctioned by the World Dance Council, which is the parent group of the NDCA. The WDC just ran the World Professional Latin, and it's the event where we send our 2 top professional couples to compete against all the other couples in the world.

That's not to say that the Ohio Star Ball couldn't run a World Professional Championship, as it does with the Professional Smooth and Rhythm. The problem is, that for the most part, only American Couples go to Ohio, since it is a closed event, except for Canada. So, World ???, I don't know.

In the Bahama's the World Pro Am attracts couples from all over the world. So as an American top Pro Am couple, I would want to win the event with the most countries represented. Therefore: the one that is the most "World", is well.......

There is, of course, a huge political controversy that plays into all this. The thread finder can probably find some of the discussions about who ended up w/ titles for various categories. World Promotions runs comps in the U.S. that are geared toward a certain audience. At the one I saw (for Slavik & Karina's farewell show), they had people doing American rumba and international rumba in the same heat, to give an example. But they are always in nice resort hotels and the participants seem thrilled. And for the overseas ones, it's a luxurious way to combine dancing and travel. There's an audience for lots of different types of events. Dance Beat had a write-up of the World's event. Someone who went could speak about it better, but it was apparently an incredible spectacle with an opening flag ceremony. The world really got into it.

oh mama! Love that place.

My question is with these various international events, are things equal, vis-a-vis the definition of pro/am? Are the competitors members of an organization that defines/regulates them the same way as, say, the NDCA? Not to rehash the teaching debate, but if the NDCA thinks that teaching gives teaching pro/ams an unfair advantage over non-teaching pro/ams, what's to say that other countries competitors are doing the same? In other words, is there uniformity? I mean, you could get a professional couple from some other country calling themselves "pro/am" and scooping up titles and money, no?

Still Trying to Get An Answer

Sorry if I am being stupid but I don't seem to be getting an answer to my initial question:

Could someone explain what this is? Just a fancy category? Was at a recent comp where all you got if you were placed was one of those 1st, 2nd 3rd discs. No money, no trophy, no line up. What's the point of this category?

If you are an amateur who has been entered (and won) by your pro in this category what is the benefit of having done so? Why bother to enter this category (I haven't checked but it probably cost more) if there is no money (as in scholarships) no trophy and no different essentially from competing in a regular heat?

What has this all to do with the responses on this thread about competitions in the Bahamas and other world locations? Why are competitions even offering these categories? Totally baffled. . .apologies for being dense.
