yesterday's activities

So the state / geographic region I live in has been decimated over the past couple of days with severe storms (I've lost count on tornadoes) and heavy rain. 95% (that is not a typo) of people in the northwest county had no power after a recent storm, and that is still the case. Social media photos of cars lined up at gas stations in that area abound (one of my relatives who works at a gas station in an adjacent town said they did 2 days worth of business in one day). The central eastern portion of the state, and some areas around ours are completely flooded.

Heavy rain descended upon us here yesterday as well - sump pump was running almost constantly, it was so bad I could hear the water coming into the pit from the external drain pipe which stresses me out. We have (had) a clogged gutter in the back so we set up buckets to catch the water coming off the roof and spent a couple hours dutifully hauling them to the ditch behind our house which was of course a lake. The storm drain in the back was completely flooded and overwhelmed such that we had to open the sump pump pipe on the side of the house (normally it leads to storm drain but it was now submerged). It did eventually recover and we were able to recap the pipe by the house.

I have no damage to report (thankfully). But didn't get much "work" work done yesterday afternoon, and two sets of clothes are still sopping wet.

Unfortunately more rain is in the forecast tonight for our state.

Thursday: theater in the evening

Yesterday:
To NYC for a museum and theater day; drive in, even though parking for 12 hours is going to be ghastly expensive and miraculously get parking on the street!
Walk 2 miles from parking space to museum; wonderful museum visit with a friend who is an editor of Art Books and knows A LOT about what I'm looking at, picking her brain is delightful
Bus down 5th avenue to 42nd street, walk over to theater on 10th avenue
yes, I got my steps in yesterday; can recommend good sneakers for a lot-of-walking kind of day; my legs and feet do not hurt and I expected them to
Dinner
Show is fine, better than I expected
Car is still in street parking space, un-molested and intact; total win
Home; crash like a downed tree (sorry, @fascination, about the downed-tree reference)

Mushing yesterday and day before yesterday, not necessarily in exact chronological order:

* More and more social media photos and videos of flooding, water rescues, roads washed out, etc.
* Called in local neighborhood handyman to clean out gutter in back, so that is now working as intended.
* Was informed there is a moratorium on writing flood insurance in my area (I should have gotten around to this a couple years ago when I started considering it, now it's moral hazard so I understand).

Tomorrow's yesterday:
* Rained AGAIN this morning including a heavy spate - storm drain overwhelmed again so uncapped sump pump discharge pipe by house. Thankfully I had decided not to go to workout class this morning because I am the one who noticed this right away. Because I am "that" person in the house that notices/anticipates the issues instead of insisting/assuming it will be fine and then refusing to admit that indeed there was an issue to be noticed earlier.
* Poked around garage and found leftover siding and rocks to use as water redirect MacGyverisms, plus more buckets/containers to collect or gather water, since now it's collecting on the other side of the house - sigh, we just noticed that gutter is likely clogged, handyman didn't look over there.

Local river officially crested to the highest it has ever been in recorded history. The last couple days the water has crept in closer to the newer / less rural cities and more flooding and closures. I think there are at least 3 "states of emergency" in effect. No idea when this will all pass, and the damage assessment and (hopefully) rebuilding of lives begins.

Spent day feeling sorry for myself and using chainsaw to address mass tree destruction. Moved on to cleaning debris filled gutters before next rain...muggy AF...change clothes 3 times. Gripe and moan. Mow lawn. Shower, cook dinner on burners...thank God for fireplace matches.. use more phone battery than I should but mental health is important

Sun ...dh and I go to dtrs to charge phones...few hours with bbs was exhausting yet therapuetic...home to order a pizza and pretty much stare at our newly charged light boxes or chat til an early bedtime which was probably for the best because...

Mon

Got to work at 630 bc I knew high strung co worker would be freaking about several things...and yet it got worse bc a parent who had unalived themselves had family who wanted to bring their littles in so that I could help give them this dreadful information in as minimally traumatizing fashion as possible which...ftr...is not possible in these circumstances...stare at wall for a very long time after that and then move on to lesser stresses..arrive home 11 hours later to find electricity still off...the fascination of old would have probably poured a libation but I'm just gonna stare at the wall some more.

Tuesday:
pick up out-of-town friend who will stay with me tonight so I can take him to airport in the morning, having forgotten that his 6:30am flight is international so he needs to be at airport at 3:30; what was I thinking; oh yeah, am picking up brother (lives in LA, coming east to do a historical reenactment) whose flight arrives at 6, so "I'm going anyway, I'll drop you off" came out of my mouth before I thought twice; oopsie

Wednesday:
Leave house at 2:30am, drop friend at terminal at 3:15; terminal is not yet open but this is NOT MY PROBLEM; wait in cell phone lot until time to pick up brother at around 6:45 but I brought a pillow and blanket and actually managed to sleep in the back seat -- the advantages of being short, the back seat was OK
Pick up brother, drive home
Planning and sorting and prep for brother's historical reenactment
Lesson! at which I am crankypants until I find something to focus on, which improves everything and lesson turns out to be life-changing in a good way
Take brother to supermarket, get ingredients for dinner, make dinner
Crash

Thursday is a lost day; I swear I did not leave the house except to go to the mailbox
oh yeah, did some theater website stuff, which will bite me later

Yesterday:
More theater website stuff
Brother's prep for reenactment involves an additional person, the kind of guy who's such a wet hot mess that when he says he'll arrive between 12 and 1, calls at 11, 5 hours away, and hasn't left yet; MessMan is planning to sleep in his car, so I offer my couch; he arrives at around 5:30; he and brother do the prep thing for the rest of the night; we get pizza
Crash

I would say that merits cranky pantedness

Thusfar. The beginning of a return to sanity...Finally able to get my prescriptions, finally able to diplomatically engage with physician on how some of their policies are in fact not contributing to my wellness and achieved some compromise...make dental appt for Monday bc sensitivity level on right side intermittently flares to a wholly unacceptable level. .Including right now and I think being crankpants has been overplayed around here...but dang, pretty sure there's a root canal in my future
