Cheap Costumes that actually look good?!

Yep. Those are dance shoes -- the style name is on the tip of my tongue.  And I thought I was the only one who found simplicity patterns to be ... ample.

The shoes are most likely capezios as they are easy for a stylist to find. You can find them in any small dance shop. Some dancers attach taps to them I think aswell

It looks like a great place to start a Latin costume though -- simple to alter, easy to customize. 8) And you're right. A straight line across my hip area is not such a great idea.  Good call, tasche. LOL.

Hey All,

I'm a first time poster, I hope this works!!

I checked out the link to the "cheap costumes" website and thought about buying one. But then, I was looking around the Internet and found another site for Rainbowshiu. She has a couple of ways to access the dresses and I chose the one on "fotop.net" I can't access her Ebay store from work (security purposes) but there is at least one dress that is EXACTLY the same as the All That Glitters site. I mean, exactly. Even the photo of the dress has the same wallpaper in the background. What gives? Is it possible that a person in England and a person in Hong Kong can have the same wallpaper, the same dress manequin, the same dress for sale, etc.?

Is this some kind of joint business venture between the two? I've had friends buy dresses from Rainbowshiu and had no problems so I'm inclined to think she's legit. What about the other one?

I've read through the whole thread and mention of the, ahem, similarities between Larinda's dress and a dress on the other site. Where does all of this end? Who's knocking off the knock offs? It's crazee I tell ya!!!

Should I avoid this potential headache and shop somewhere else? Anyone selling dresses right now? I'm looking for a used Smooth dress as I can't afford a new one just now.

What do you think about the dress shananigans?

It worked!! So, welcome to df. :)

I stay away from all shananigans, myself.

Hi Michelle,

We know each other (think: roomate in Springfield last year :)

I bought three dresses from Rainbowshui off ebay and wouldn't wear them in public. Just not happy with the material or the workmanship. Perhaps others have had better luck....

Have you thought about renting??? What are you doing with the black and white ones you have??

I will PM you and catch up.

Hey Michelle,

I've noticed that sort of thing too. My impression is that people are buying cheaper dresses and reselling them at higher prices. I suspect that some don't have manequins so they just copy and paste the original photo.

grrr. :x

Hi Michelle,

I have never bought a dress from Rainbowshiu from Ebay, but I have had her custom made two standard gowns for me. The first one I ordered was a design from her website with some of my own modifications. I love the dress, it is in very good quality. But I did pay extra to have the dress done with Swarovski stones and not the normal Korean stones. My second dress is a design from one of my friends' dress. I changed the color into pink, and of course, had it done with 60 grosses of Saworvskit Rose AB and Crystal AB stones. The cost is under 1,000 US. I will be recieving the dress sometimes this week, and I will let you know how it looks. But from my first dress from her, it's in Very Good condition. But again, this was custom made, not from her Ebay store.

There are several different that I get my dresses from. There is this one lady in NY who custom made dresses for me. She sells on Ebay too. She has made me one Latin Dress, and it is really nice. The price is about the same as Rainbowshiu. Other than that, there are two ladies locally who are both very good at dresses. One of them has been a designer for a long time, but new to the dance dress business, the other one is a current pro competitor in the US. Those two ladies charge more for dresses. PM me if you are interested.

If you're looking for reasonable, high quality, elegant gowns (latin or standard), you need to look further than our DF seamstress, Laura! I find the gowns posted on Rainbowsiu or the allgitter...The sewmanship is not that great. Not enough details & seems a bit 'flimsy' to me. The stoning is pretty poor.

She's made a gown for me & I wish I kept it (well back then, I got it made for a showcase that an acquaintance asked me to do for fun. No partner in sight, so of course, I sold it...)

You can see the picture. I was also upset that I didn't keep the regular size image! Now I only got the resized one...not as clear :(

She did the sewing. I did the stoning (must say I think I did a better job in stoning than some of the gowns I've seen on these 'cheap costume' sites). And Voila!

Aww, thanks swan. Only thing is, I'm not cheap (well, I am compared to the "name" gown makers, but not cheap like Rainbow), and I have been very hesitant to do mail order. I've become very picky about fit and can't really do proper fittings on someone who I can't see in person.

I have to get off my sickbed (I'm sick AGAIN) and get two dresses done before mid-March. That basically gives me a month. Busy busy!!

I said 'reasonable', not 'cheap' :)

Is this the pattern we are talking about?

If so its a knit bodice so thats a plus though I would still go for a couple of sizes smaller as simplicity patterns seem to be tent sized

Has anybody made a costume based on this pattern yet? Joann has Simplicity patterns on sale for 99 cents this weekend, and I think I'm going to go for it. Tips, anyone? 8)

I've seen it in the pattern book. It's very simple -- the bodice isn't fitted at all, which could be problematic for anyone curvy. Still, if you've never sewn before it's a decent enough place to start. I'm just tickled that they've finally made a dance costume patttern....

Anyone curvy would definitely apply to me. But what do you expect from a Simplicity pattern? I'm still thinking about what kind of fabric to use to minimize problems. Then again, a few strategically placed darts cover a multitude of figure ... challenges.

Velvet is "out" right now for dance costumes, but man does it make it easy to cover a multitude of figure flaws....
