Give me a pep talk.

two friends who got married at 18 apiece. Now, 21 years later, they're the ones giving me the best level-headed advice I get anywhere. Then of course, there's my Mom, who quit college and got married at 17. And now, 56+ years later, she's still happily married (something a lot of 30-something newlyweds aren't, years later :? ) and she gives a fair amount of good advice as well. 8) quote]

The problem with these examples is that both couples mentioned came from a different era. A time when it was the only thing most women aspired to...if you go back even further, you'll find it was the norm to get married in the 14-16 age range.

That is not longer the case. Unless you can time travel yourself back to 1950...there isn't a reason in the world why a person should get married that early (or even be considering marriage for that matter).

My friends who are 40 are from a different era? I'll be sure to tell them that.

And not to be difficult, but people should be considering whatever they damn well please. It may or may not be a good idea (and hopefully they have family or friends who can help them work through the decision.) But they certainly have the right to get engaged at whatever age they desire. Just as you or I have the right to choose not to. There's not absolute right or wrong here.

The idea that someone can be wrong to even think of marriage at an age I, a total stranger, consider too young, is what I take exception to. It's none of my biz. If Snuggles wanted advice about that, I'm sure she could've started a thread in DA to ask for it. 8)

Good luck to you both. btw did you see the news blurb on MSN last week? Women in some poll or the other described the ideal man as one who dances. (among other things) You're definitely on the right track. 8)

 LOL Jenn, please come over to show this to my male friends! Pleeeeease? I need partners. :P

DITTO!
Go ahead, get engaged, LIVE WITH THE GUY for a few years. Do you really think you will be able to stand each other for the rest of your lives? Take that into consideration. It is a very important factor. People change. (

Come on. Not everybody buys into the idea of living together before getting married. I'm no prude or hypocrite, but I don't agree with it at all, for a lot of reasons that have nothing to do with rightness or wrongness. It's just not something I would do. Full stop.

Besides, isn't the topic a pep talk for a wannabe dancer guy?

Studies have shown that in fact, couples who live together have a higher breakup rate than those who do not move in together until marriage.
My wife was 17 when we married, I was nineteen. That was 30 years ago.
And it has nothing to do with the old days, nearly half of our peers have been married and divorced a least once.

Yeah. :( I checked my online home pages, but still haven't found that article about the ideal guy. Still looking. It did specifically mention dancing, though. That I remember.

I don't ever want to GET married, and I don't come HERE for marital counseling from people who don't know me OR my lifestyle, OR my SO.

So, as much as I'd LIKE to comment on this Dr. Phil-Has-Hijacked-This-Thread, I won't (besides this).

Besides- it worked for Loretta Lynn :? *snort* *snick*

And back to the topic at hand ...

Amen, sister. 8)
I believe our friend was going to call the dance school and see how it goes. Not many guys dare to do that. Usually when we tell them to take lessons, they dissapear! :P  Courageous and smart man you are, phatmonky. Thanks for taking this wise decision. :D
Come on lads. Let's pep the young man! :D :D :D

I called several dance studios this morning, but my schedule apparently does not fall in the same timeline as theirs' (no answer, but this was at 9am and I didn't have a chance to try again)
So, tomorrow, when I a more open day, I will be trying again. I also appreciate the idea of calling clubs to see if they offer such classes - hadn't considered that one :)

My studio doesn't open up until 11 or 12am, so don't get dissapointed. If you tried calling this evening, I'm sure you'd get answered. :D
Most studios offer a first-lesson for free tryout so that you can see if you like it and so on. It's a very good idea to take those first lessons with many different studios to see what fits you, both financially and (most importantly) dancewise.
So in all this hijacked issue ( ) I haven't understood what style of dancing you're going after. Ballroom? Salsa? Hip-hop/jazz? That said, I've heard it's a neat idea to do salsa lessons at clubs. I don't think that's possible with ballroom, and I have absolutely no idea about hip hop and jazz, though other Dfers will be glad to inform you. :D
Good luck with your studio searching,

Twilight Elena

Yes, I'd suggest calling again in the afternoon. Most of the studios I know of don't open for business until around lunch time or later.

Yep. I thought about this while I should have been sleeping. I recommend the same. Call back later. A lot of studios are open 1PM - 10PM because that's when the bulk of their students are available for lessons.

Also, if you get a minute, take a look at one of the older "price of lessons" threads, so you have an idea of what to expect from the studio you find. Or come back here and ask.

I wish you luck, guy. 8)

On the immediate, I'd like to learn some C&W as soon as possible (texas two step and variations there of).
From there on, heck, I dunno, I'd just like to be a better dancer  I woudl imagine learning any dance helps with your style and rhythm with other dancing.

That it does...particularly salsa... :) But then I'm biased. I even am going to call a salsa line dance and that is something!!
