Wow, I was guessing it was more like 4000 pro/am students, or $100,000 additional income per year for the NDCA. Is the NDCA really that small? Only 1000 in a year?I am in no way a represetative for the NDCA. But I do go to the meetings and lobby for the PDF and the pros, and vote on the motions presented which become the rules.
It does not buy you representation.
The one main benefit for you the pro-am student dancer is that it is a way for the NDCA to start tracking points. They also have to paying someone to do all that goes with the process of managing 1000 competing pro-ams, all of their entries, levels, and placements... You can't have a ranking system if only half of the people are registered. And you can't track that many people for free.
You asked for it... a tracking system. So, now everyone has to register and everyone has to pay.
In reality can you imagine walking on a PGA golf course to do a pro-am tour and not registering with the PGA? What other competitive sport can you think of where you aren't required to register as a competitor. In reality it is only $25, that is less than two group classes... Ya'll ladies pay more for one pair of fishnets, and those suckers hurt!
And as a note: As one of the two PDF representatives at the meeting, and we choose to abstain our vote on this until we felt like there was time to talk to our constituents about such a wide sweeping measure.
