Newbie here...go easy on me, ok? ;-)

Jess_718, it is great that you're posting here for input, and I certainly don't mean to be discouraging in any way. You are not really highjacking my thread....but, for more specific input, I have always seen that starting my own thread has been helpful for me.
 
Everyone's got their own opinions on tango, but I think a beginner could do worse than the opinions here: (it's French, but it should make enough sense regardless).

I think you can learn some things from some of those videos, however it's very unlikely that you'll learn everything you need from it, (or any other video series for that matter). Whether it's a good series to start with, is hard to say, as I don't think any video series would be great for beginners in and of itself. I do think they could supplement good teaching, and spark some conversations with your teacher(s).

The bottom line, a video can't see/feel what you are doing and make corrections.


I don't know why some people here think that Dario believes the patterns are the goal of the videos, because I don't think that's true at all. Maybe because I've taken classes from him, I have some different opinions.

Patterns are simply drills, intend to help get some basic proficiency at some skill or skills. Patterns aren't the dance, any more than drills are the game when practicing a sport. I've never understood why some people seem to think that teachers who teach patterns, are advocating that people do patterns on the dance floor when dancing socially.
 
Lilly, I did look up both the schools you mentioned today. One is in Sherman Oaks, the other one is near Marina Del Rey (but 100 level class starts at 7:30PM), and beginner classes are on weekdays for both places. So neither of these two options would work for me.

I am located in Irvine, what would be my best bet to get a good start with beginner lessons? Do you, or anyone else familiar with the LA/Orange County tango schools, recommend lessons at Atomic Ballroom/Avant Garde/Arthur Murray? The other option is Tapas, the instructor is Marcelo Rivero. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

You can post the link omitting some dots or something, or perhaps just let us know the artists name, the video's date and such?

Again 321, I fear you haven´t taken to heart what almost everyone in this sub-forum wrote about learning tango and thus about learning any dance ! Perhaps we should move to the salsa forum, but I do claim frankly, that these vids do not show bachata as it is danced at it´s origin. Better watch this video. Bachata is about feet not about hips.
