I think this feeling is part of why it's affecting you so strongly. Do blame him! It was inappropriate of him to proposition you. And likely nothing you did encouraged him. Guys who do that sort of thing are usually not tuned into social cues and are not responding to your behavior, just to their own impulses. Some guys treat it as a "numbers game," figuring if they always ask, they will sometimes get lucky. They frankly don't think about or care how their behavior affects the women they approach.
I know the slimey feeling that results from an encounter like that, but try to see it as being about him and his rotten manners, not about anything you did.
(my bold)
I totally agree with Waltzgirl.
You are still using common thinking patterns of victims... trying to figure out how you brought it on yourself. "What do I do that someone could see me as that kind of person?"
In a way, this is a normal reaction to feeling as though you don't have control. "What did I do?" is a way to reason out how to regain control (by changing what you do)
However, it also leaves you blaming yourself inappropriately, just like victims of assault are prone to do.
"If only I hadn't..."...
"It's my fault because I...."
"I should know better than to...."
Self-blame is a way for you to convince your victimized self that you are not powerless, but rather you can determine all outcomes by how you do things.
Unfortunately, in cases like this, it almost always goes to far. People don't just rationally assess themselves and what they might need to do to reduce their chance of being victimized in the future, such as being more aware of surroundings, keeping a close eye on their drink at a bar, or taking a self-defense class...you know
PROACTIVE steps that are worth doing even if you haven't been victimized.
No, they engage in REACTIVE,
fear based behaviors, going so far as to eliminate things in their life that they have
every right to enjoy, such as looking attractive, leaving the house alone and, in your case, using cabeceo at a milonga and dancing tango without worrying about sexual harassment.
So please stop RIGHT NOW wondering how you brought this on yourself.
If it happens
regularly with
many different men, then I'd think maybe something in your behavior or dress is sending off the wrong impression. But ONE inappropriate creep does not a floozey make.
