Replacing Windshield Glass?

I was driving home last night and while I was on the highway, I heard a loud bang sound (maybe a small rock smashed against my car??) By the time I realized what was going on, I noticed a small crack on my windshield glass about 1 inch long. I haven't had the time to take it to an auto bodyshop yet but I know the cost of windshield glass replacement can be astronomical so I'm wondering whether or not this type of damage can be repaired or should I brace myself for a heart attack?

Hmm. I'm not sure how the replace or repair decision gets made, but I know someone who has a windshield repair business. A little crack may not mean a complete replacement is necessary, because a lot of them are repairable.

Depending on your deductible, your car insurance may cover much of the cost, anyway.

Windshields are made up of 2 panes of glass. if it's just the outer one that's cracked, you can probly drive around with it like that for a while. (as long as it's not obstructing your vision.) Just be careful not to turn the windshield de-fogger on with hot air. It will cause the crack to expand across the windshield. As for fixing it, there's nothing that can really be done besides a new windshield.

Uh... Lynn, honey... I'll hold your hand. It's not going to be pleasant.

They have to be a little chip in order to be repaired. If it cracks, the show's over. Shortly after I moved back to the States last Nov (I was actually on my way to the car dealership to buy my car...) I was driving my mom's car. I heard a pop and looked down at the base of the windshield... A little chip had shot across and I could still see the end of the crack creeping across to the passenger side. I felt terrible, but there was nothing I could do. Luckily, my dad had prepared ahead. It was covered by his car insurance. You might check your policy....

I don't think I'd want to drive around with a crack repaired windshield. I'm just skeptical that it would actually last.

Here in Massachusetts, windshields are covered under your insurance and you can just call and get it fixed right away, no cost to you. I suppose there's a silver lining to the high costs we pay in premiums.

I just called a glass repair shop and the news isn't very pleasant - basically the verdict is if the crack is more than 1/4" long (I haven't had the time to measure it, but it might be), the shop will not repair it.....I know windshield glass replacement is covered by my insurance but there is a $500 deductible so I might have to call my insurance agent and figure out all the fine print...*sighs big time*...

OK, now I feel like i should get a "windshield protector"!!!

It's against the law here to drive with a crack in your windshield, so you have no choice. You'll get a ticket if you are stopped by the police...

However, virtually ALL car insurance policies cover this at full price. Check with your insurance co...

Hmm.... trying to find the silver lining.......

Think of it this way: next year when your windshield chips, you will have already met the deductible from this winter....

Ok, it was a real stretch..... :(

No idea. I'm a techie, but not that kind. I just helped him make business cards.

But apparently, he does a pretty brisk business repairing windshields for a company that maintains a fleet of cars and trucks.

I know I can make a claim, but I think the catch is that my premium is going to go up....so i'm not sure if it's worth it though....
