Replacing Windshield Glass?

This is not part of that elusive calculation that includes tickets and claims - it is separate.

Windshields are usually covered under "comprehensive" rather than "collision". The comprehensive part of the policy generally has a lower deductable. And a windshield claim won't generally do much to your rates.

There are a lot of auto glass companies that will do the job for whatever the insurance will pay, so it might cost a dime out of your pocket. Plus, some of them will come to your workplace and do the job in the parking lot while you work. Please do get it fixed because, even though it may not look like it, a cracked windshield is weaker than an intact one. Some air bag systems (particularly the front passenger types that pop out of the top of the dash) depend on the windshield being there to make the bag deploy towards the occupant. If the air bag deployment blows the windshield out, the bag may go out after it, leaving the occupant with no protection.

You're right, cornutt, the windshield claim is under the "comprehensive" portion. I'm not sure what the effect will be on my premium if i do make a claim. Oh, and btw, i don't think we get the kind of luxury of people coming to my workplace and fix my car for me service here !

It can't hurt to ask around. That's a pretty common business around here -- everything from mobile windshield repair (as cornutt mentioned) to mobile detailing and a ton of other things. They'll come to you.

This kind of remind me of a conversation i had with a friend who just moved from the States. When she lived in CA, all she had to do was leave her mails out in the from door and someone from the post office would come and pick it up (complimentary service of USPS??). When she moved to Canada, she was quite amused when we told her that she actually had to drop her mails in the mailbox   !! Quite a funny story!

USPS, Fedex, UPS will all pick up packages if you prearrange a pick-up time. I wonder if that's what she meant.

Other than that, as far as I know, your regular carrier will pick up mail for you, if you leave it in the mailbox in front of your house (Or wherever you pick up your mail.)

Yup. Just re-read your post. Sounds like we're talking about the same thing. I usually take my mail to the post office or to a large mailbox/dropoff location. But, if I wanted to, yes, I could leave my mail and the carrier would pick it up, free of charge.

Yes. Convenience is everything.

No, she meant USPS. I guess it's quite different here in Canada, we literally have to drop the mail in the mailbox (which could be several blocks away or even further). Leaving it out in the front of the house is an invitation for your neighbour's pets to play with it!

That is different. I've even known a few mail carriers who would stop by the homes of some shut-ins, ring the doorbell, and pick up/drop off the mail in person. That wasn't required, btw, they were just doing it to be nice. Pretty cool.

not yet, i have to get an estimate first - if it's repairable, then i won't have to replace the whole thing, then no claim is necessary. It's a hassle having to go through the whole insurance company - that's the problem when there's only 1 player in the car insurance market....

The shop I'm planning on visiting is around my home and I won't be able to get it until tomorrow morning so hopefully my car can hold out for that long....

yep...these days they dont shatter...I put a crack in me windshield about 8 years ago driving to houston...semi threw a stone at me....and the thig never even got bigger

If it makes you feel better when you drive in Northern Idaho and you DON"T have a crack in your windshield people ask if you are new in town or just visiting. Yes the roads are that bad up in the pandhandle area of the state. LOL:shock:
