Dance hold can be taught, embrace can not, it comes from within
Interpretation could be taught but I don't think anyone has a good interpretation yet, that is a task for the future.
8C basic is big joke made by Meastros from Argentina to make TA harder for beginers. Basic step in almost every dance is something really easy to perform, 4 steps in Bachata, mambo in Salsa. 8C is construction from 8 different steps. First step is leader backward - forbidden start of dance, please forgot start with step no1 if you do not want to look as moron. Step 2 is challenge for leader and step 3 is aside of partner, what the hell! And now you have to lead partner to cross in 5. Then 6,7 and 8 to catch a breath and again.. Looking at beginer class dancing 8C for first time is like group of crippled donkeys.
Embrace is something you need to teach new students. I have experience that even married couple cannot embrace each other properly. I see problem comes from romantic movies. If lady just fall in love (or money are talking..), she hangs up partner neck, head leans backward to expect proper kiss from this big guy with thick moustache. And when she receive it, she bend her leg in knee, to express how deep and intense is this experience.

A single, small backstep isn't verboten if you've checked to ensure there's space, the problem is when leaders start taking multiple backsteps or heading in random directions as they try to complete that 12–step sequence they 'learned' in some workshop last week.
What you're missing is that the 1st step backwards is actually the step to** the ronda; the 'exit' (salida) from sitting and being invited to dance ¿Salimos a bailar?
Also, of course, the space under my a[r]$[$][e] (adjust to acceptable dialect of English for your locale) is mine! If you're behind, do not encroach! So a small step within that space is allowed. Of course we should also be at a slight angle to the LOD, giving more space.
The 8CB was only intended as a simplified teaching sequence [for Americans?], because it embodies many basic elements. Unfortunately some teachers grab onto it as the paso básico of AT. I'm glad we didn't discover the 8CB until much later after learning the cross and side steps. There are some good teachers!
**I say 'to' the ronda rather than directly into the ronda. You should, of course, join at an entry point and check with any already there that you can enter.

Swap the genders, and those not getting dances might like that system, minus the brothel drinking den aspect. There are elements of that today:
- Taxi dancers
- Classes have structured partner switching
- Interesting picture below from a festival, I had not heard of wearing a badge like this to formally help role balance. BTW, what is a ROLE BLANCER?
Technology could provide an interesting twist: Cameras and AI count how much dancing you do. Maybe it would provide a discount for the less populated role dancing and a per-dance fee for each tanda danced by the oversubscribed role. Hmmm, maybe a real-time auction system... I might find that depressing to see my Tango "value" expressed in dollars. Not saying any of this is a good idea, just been reading too much AI stuff lately (actualized, theorized, and fictionalized).
I don't think it ever was popular with better teachers! We can across it sometime after learning to lead the cross just from walking. Side steps came with ochos. Nevertheless it's a useful teaching reference to quickly arrive at some position for some other element.

I know it isn't their intention at all, but man would I feel bad if I were invited by a person wearing that badge; I would think that I'm only being invited because I'm one of the leftovers after the initial rounds of cabeceo. Just because roles have to be balanced...
Could just have dual-role or something less implicative honestly.

The "balancer" compensates role imbalance with the opposite sex, the "blanker" does not.
