In the case of too many regulars and not enough guests/beginners, the organisers do make informed decisions and forego that tanda. :)

That latter case sounds very Darwinian, and it reminds me of the accounts I've heard about the BTE as a massive event.

Belgrade! One of the organisers called it intimate. For some definition of intimacy, I suppose...

Addendum: I suppose it's very intimate when you get your own cosy corner, personalised for all your needs, and surrounded by friends and enjoyable dancers!
 
I met a lady who runs a very small Tango scene. As part of every Milonga they make a circle within a circle, leaders on the inside and followers on the outside. You dance with the person across from you. Then the followers all shift by one leader. It repeats until literally everyone has danced with everyone. Contra has a similar notion.
 
You can do a lot on a small scale. But for what would you take a longer journey?
In the end, a flagship milonga is not a basic tango service. If you don't feel like you're in good hands there, you can go somewhere else a bit smaller. And I also understand that the locals in large metropolises don't really like to deal with the constant influx of tourists.

Like where? I didn’t get this feeling anywhere. If you are in a clique or with friends, others are others. Whether locals or visitors. If you are a freelancer or not attached to any particular group, local or visitor is also a non-factor.

If cliques can exist around me, then they can also exist around others. I also see this as completely normal social behavior. And whether tourists are popular with the locals or not may depend on many factors.

But let's look at it from the other side: if hosts organize party games, so that some of their guests at least one time dance with strangers at all, one time dance with other partners at all, one time invite at all ... then there is an underlying problem or not?
