What would you do if you couldn't dance?

Compañero, I havent been on the dancefloor since december for medical reasons. Knee surgery will be in june. Dont know what will be next year.

Sometimes I am DJing. Thats what left.

thanks for sharing DJing. DJing is hiding in there, he'll come out sometime or another, I know he will...I hope for my own sake we all will. I am sure we all will.

This time, no money no dance.

That is absolutely wrong, chomsky! Remember? We were discussing philosophy and linguistics, and so I know that you are a really enthusiastic guy. So, your disappointment is a transient feeling.

And for certain: dancing is one of those things you can get for free!

I am an absolute autodidact because for years I got no money for classes. And finally I became a good dancer anyway. I learned completely on the dance floor simply by doing. All those experienced girls once had been my teacher. I frequently used to ask for a feed back and also asked dancers how to lead this or that stuff. Of course I could not afford the entrance fee to those parties, so I tried to sneake and sidle into the venues, and drank tap water for years. (Today I pay it back, of course).

Stop whining, find a suitable place for dancing outside

Yesterday (see below) some friends (and me on the ghetto blaster) danced outside in a park. That actually costs really nothing. And because you seem to be an eloquent guy you surely will have a lot of friends to meet and to dance with. The white colour on the ground is baby powder and/or talcum. And baby powder is not expensive! So, come on and start to organize somthing with your friends. And soon post some photos here as proof!

Dancing costs no money, my friend.

Excellent picture. Your post is very interesting. I notice that you are in Germany, and your implication is that you can learn dancing free. Maybe in Germany. I note that most of the posters who post here say that it certainly costs money, and in many if not most cases lot's of it. It should be interesting to see what other posters have to say.

Yes, freeageless, I'm really surprised - there's no way I could dance for nothing here in the UK. And in Chomsky's case, her country is far more politically and economically unstable than the UK/US/Germany.

If only I could sneak in to places - always a person on the door to take your money. Then there's travel. I don't know anyone else who dances so couldn't organise a get-together. Maybe Chomsky is in the same position as she is a relative newbie like me.

But back to Chomsky's question. If I had never danced, I would probably be sat on my bottom saying I was rubbish at physical stuff. Now? Best scenario I would run a dance studio - you don't have to be able to dance to run a studio.

But I think Chomsky was coming from a more financial p.o.v., in which case I would do volunteer work. I used to volunteer as an ambulance attendant for years and it gave me a similar sense of learning, cameraderie and fulfilment as dancing.

Maybe I would have kids. Whenever people ask me about having kids, I explain that it would compromise my dance pursuits. (I'm actually only half-joking).

They totally do get in the way...BUT you may get permanent dance partners out of them. both of my boys will be required to learn to dance, so they can dance with me at every bloody family and other function ever. I am the mom from hell in that regard. Thankfully, the 5 yr old seems to like the little dancing he's done.

Ah, opendoor - sadly we have nothing of the sort. Perhaps harder to get going here due to remnants of British empire cultural snobbery?

The government will, however, pay for you to have your castle moat cleaned but only if you're a politician. But I guess that's a whole other story...

You're looking at upwards of 40 Euros ($49) a lesson. From 10 Euros ($12) to get into a social/lesson. From 15 Euros ($19) (for me) for a cab one way. From 18 Euros ($20) to rent practice space per hour (per couple). There's nowhere else you can really dance except in your own home. :( I would say I spend an average of 160 Euros ($195) a week on dance and I am only a newbie and get a discount from my teacher. There are some more experienced dancers at my studio who are spending around 700 Euros ($840) a week. We're all amateurs and only dance as a hobby.

If I couldn't dance? I'd find a rich husband...

Or come to Germany. :D

Chomsky's whole country has problems. Like the large chunk of Parliament that gave the Fascist salute while being sworn in (lovely picture of that in FT Weekend yesterday) and possibly starting the total collapse of the Euro. I'm not going to suggest going all community-organizer for dance when there are a lot more important things going on. If you can, you can, if you can't, you can't.

now you DFers are an inspiration! you made me smile! keep them coming, I so love the posts!!!I'm lucky!!!!

rich husband......or come to Germany

Sorry Ladybird, I´m as poor as could be, but you are welcome ;)

Don´t know, think it should/could not be simply a question of Germany or UK. Seems you haven´t found the right guys/ the right community. Besides my dance shoes my most important dance prop/requisite simply is my mobile. If the weather is fine we meet and dance.

Watch this vid (taken last year in a park and please excuse my bended knees, twas rather difficult to dance on cobble-stone)

If the weather is fine we meet and dance.

Ah, that must be why - are you familiar with British weather? :D It is, how do you say? Sehr schrecklich! Nope, nobody does that at all - meet up and dance I mean. It's considered quite impolite to play music in public here, although from my trips to the continent I know that this is not the case over there.

If I could not "dance" the way I do now? due to finances...I would sign up with a cruise ship (line) as a dance partner per se...or really anything involving people on the ship...and see places I've never seen before (pssssssss I have several friends in the last ten years who have done this very thing with no regrets at all...exciting!). Or I would move to Winter Park Colorado and sign on for the ParaOlympic Snow SportsTraining Team and get the wounded warriors to experience it.

I just love your post! I've re-read it a couple of times! This sounds like a fairytale, what you are describing. Do these things happen to real people and not just on films? If that's the case, then I should have opted to stop dancing before it came upon me...he he he
