I filed my federal tax return Friday, and I'm getting a whopping $51 back as a refund. I'd go out and celebrate, except $51 isn't enough to actually go out and celebrate with. The $51 refund is substantially smaller than last year's refund, all thanks to the new tax code. At least I didn't owe anything.

I made three small adjustments to my withholdings this morning, which should result in a modestly higher refund next year. I'll monitor the adjustments through the next few pay checks, and I'll make additional adjustments if necessary.

We owed this year. That was mostly due to unexpectedly large distributions from mutual funds which were (as usual) paid in December. The see-sawing last year caused many to trade a bit more than usual, so more capital gains were realized.

I think if I complained to anyone about this, they would take out the tiniest violin in the world and play "my heart bleeds for you".

Rough drive into work today. Left the house at 5:15 a.m., got to work at 6:00 a.m. Lots of snow changing to freezing rain makes for a messy commute. Now safely sipping cocoa, and hoping this mess is gone by the afternoon drive home.

Come on, surely you can go out and buy 3 decent cocktails with $51! Or go out and buy yourself a nice bottle of Basil Hayden's?

I've been sick for over a week. I missed a competition this past weekend, though that could have been worse. Entries will be rolled over to another competition, so it cost me little or nothing, plus it was a clear decision; I didn't feel all that horrible, but symptoms were such that people would have been horrified if I had shown up (visible symptoms included conjunctivitis :D) I only hit the whiny point today and that is because yesterday I was sure that this was all clearing up. Today, if anything, I feel a little worse. I'll go back to the doctor tomorrow, but I am tired of this.

you know sometimes i forget that a dance studio is a place of work too, with its own internal drama. i was looking at heat lists for a local independent competition to see what pros were competing and saw that one of my teachers apparently has some non-franchise juniors competing with him... most likely was not supposed to be noticed by people. I don't really care that he's stepping out, i just want to know like RIGHT NOW if he's planning on bugging out before the next competition he supposedly doing with me, because i will take that money and time and energy and focus it on another goal. Instead of spending a ton of effort trying to get my latin opens looking less like utter and complete crap. FOR REAL DUDE I HAVE DRAMA AT MY OWN WORK I DONT NEED IT WITH DANCE.

@scullystwin42, the competitive ballroom dance world is small enough that I think it's assumed that everything one does is known by everyone else. Thus, I would hope that whatever he is doing is with the knowledge/blessing of the studio. If you ask about his longevity, will he or they tell you?

I’m going to put it in monetary terms when I speak with them. We’ll see what they say. I was just venting because I really didn’t want the drama.

scullystwin42 - I thought most franchises didn't work with juniors (though I could be mistaken). So maybe this is the way he does that, and the studio is already aware? While I know drama can occur at dance studios, there might not be any here. Fingers crossed for you and your teacher!

ours does. In fact, there’s a junior at my studio, sooo... this pro has had a foot out the door for like a year, which I am ok with and have been expecting him to leave for a while. My only issue is that I don’t want to waste my time and money on lessons that won’t amount to much. Yes, I’ll get better in general, but I could spend that time and money on my main style (rhythm) and on the show dance I’m doing (first show dance in 7 years).
