Whining Thread #2

Small whine...assigned to temporary detail at work...and due to longer and variable hours, had to temporarily give up weekly yoga class, because I can't make the class time...at the end of the day I'm mentally and physically exhausted...have only been making it to the gym twice a week, although I still try to walk at lunch, and about two days a week I have done some yoga and free weights at home....and at the end of the week I'm too tired to the dance party...haven't been dancing in over 2 weeks...and haven't been able to schedule a weekend lesson either because of pro's scheduling difficulties...the detail will be over in 2 or 3 weeks, and I'm hoping it's not extended...but I have a feeling not.

So the pro I was complaining about decided to post on his Facebook page that he was with another studio for these juniors. So that makes this whole conversation a hell of a lot easier. Done. Over it. The only thing frustrating right now is that I have to wait until this evening to finalize that. On the plus side it means I get to spend more time money and energy on my show dance and rhythm!

update on the pro side hustle drama: he did NOT tell the owners of the studio (one of whom is my other pro, and who happen to also be good friends with side hustle pro) that he was competing at this independent with another studio. And at least 3 franchise teachers/owners in the region noticed the facebook post and sent it to the owners. the chat last night went pretty smoothly - however, i did avoid directly confronting my other pro who i dance with because i had a long hard day at work, wanted to enjoy my lesson for a bit, and i knew i had to deal with his wife's reaction. I totally chickened out on dealing with pro and how he'd react to side hustle pro/best friend doing this.
His wife, however, totally understood my reaction of "nope" to dancing with him, and i think she didn't want to deal with her husband (my other pro) about the whole situation either, but she has to. so, lesson that was scheduled for tonight was cancelled, and i will most likely cancel ALL THE REST of them with him. i don't think side hustle pro can recover from this mistake, at least not with me.

Ouch. My sympathies. Pro drama sucks.

Currently dreading my post-comp discussion with pro next week, so I have some sense of where your brain is at... I laid the foundation for my chat on the plane back, and am not sure how he's going to take the "this is where I am headed, you let me know if I can do that here/with you" undercurrent. I've decided that his vision for my future and my vision for my future are not currently aligned, and I need to know if they can get there... and to do that, I'm gonna need to be blunt (because pro does not read subtle well).

Pro just cancelled today's lesson saying he'd call me later to reschedule. Darn. I was all geared up for the discussion.

And I can't make my second one this week because of a late work meeting.

Is the universe trying to tell me something?

Major whine...the women's restroom on the floor where I work is closed for renovation for a couple of months...so I have to either walk up or down a flight a stairs to visit the restroom...this is not cool...a middle aged woman who drinks a lot of water and tea has a long hike to the restroom...on the plus side (I guess) think of all the extra exercise I'm going to get walking up and down stairs a couple of times a day...and I've heard the new restroom will be very nice, but it will be a long while getting here...

And as expected, he's just realized he's away this weekend competing and can't fit me in before he goes

I may burst holding this one in until next week. I've already been holding it for a month because I didn't want to do it immediately pre-comp...

OMG, people. The dress-selling experience... this is why I don't make dresses for a living.
  • Dancer comes to mine and tries on several of my old dresses. Likes 2, takes pictures to discuss with her pro.
  • I hear later from her pro that she's worried about the open back on them. He asks me to message her saying we can talk options.
  • Despite having explicitly stated alterations were possible, dancer goes "oh good! Can you bring 2 (only one of which was in the 2 that she liked and took pictures of) to the studio so I can try them where there is more space?" I agree.
  • Somewhere in there, dancer commented that the back on one bothered them more than on the other... had to seriously bite my tongue to not point out that the two she was commenting on have EXACLY THE SAME BACK.
The first two that she liked are far easier to alter. The third, because of much heavier stoning and the use of a zipper, would be a total pain. Current plan is to bring all 3.

(Alterations that I include in the asking price: swapping out the bra, skirt hemming, shortening/lengthening/adding flesh-coloured elastic straps. Alterations I'd have to charge for/up the price slightly for: reworking the entire back, adding sleeves or stoning. Does that seem fair???)

Re: two dresses with the same back but different impressions from the potential customer

The customer is always right???

Best not to say anything.

You could also offer a small discount if she takes a dress unaltered, and has someone else alter it. She can use the discount towards alterations, and you can use the freed up time however you like .... Just a thought! Good luck with the dress sales.

Oh, agreed... I didn't say anything on the cut. My pro is the same. He complains about the back on one of my dresses, but not the other... and they are cut from the same pattern. I find it amazing that I have two dresses that are exactly the same cut, but in different materials and colours (and one has a belt, while the other has a shorter skirt) and everyone thinks that they are "so different". Also explains why a dancer I know who has a new dress about every 10 seconds has everyone always talking about the new one, with me going "but, it's the same... just blue o_O:rolleyes:"

And as I made them, I'm probably the best one to alter them... have the matching material, know how they are constructed, etc. But can definitely present that as an option!
