Best New Songs

Zac Brown Homegrown - I hear country shuffle. Nice slow West Coast Swing. I wouldn't ask a newbie to dance it this slow, but with someone who understands how to use the connection, it would feel really good.
There are some interesting syncopations that the drummer is doing there around 2:30.
That was my 1st, 2nd, 3rd... impression.
Would also work as a nite club 2 step. In fact... if I ever get to dance it with one of our better dancers... I'd likely mix the two depending where we were in the song.

Country Swing, to me, is the same as "Cowboy Swing," which is that deal where you stand in place and only move your feet if you have to but your arms and elbows are flying all over the place at face level as you do move after move... Too slow for that.
Maybe country swing is something different where you are?

I doubt it. I don't have much experience in country music at all, so I was just guessing. Thanks though!
 
I think Homegrown sounds more like a countrified cha cha. In fact, there are several videos out there of people doing a dance called the Homegrown Honky Tonk, which looks very much like a country cha cha.

Dress Blues, at 44 mpm, is one of those songs that seems to me too fast for a slow waltz and too slow for a Viennese. It seems to be a very popular tempo for the country and folk dancers though.
 
I think you all are right about Homegrown being a Cha Cha. Seems to fit it better than just about anything else.

Am I the only one who tries to dance it out to figure out what it is? :bookworm:
 
This is off topic but since we've roamed into Country Cha Cha territory, this is the song that made me want to learn Cha Cha

Yup. Most chas have a heavy (longer) 1 and a semi-heavy 5 (like Rumba, Salsa,
etc.). Swings tend to be more evenly heavy (shorter 1) beat-wise, with that "swung"
or straight pacing.

Experience should help one to mentally or "visually" dance a lot of music out.
Imagine a Cha basic would need a longer (staccato) 1 or 5 for doing the side
direction reversal comfortably while a Swing basic would need a more even beat
for the 6 count figure to fit into 8 count musical phrasing.
 
Shared this one in another thread, but I heard it on Alt-J (satellite radio) and thought, "I could WCS to this." Someone else said it would also work for a hustle.

Thoughts?
