Yes, my comment was difficult to understand. Eduardo Masci is THE best close embrace AT dancer in the world (in my book). He selects music that exactly fits a certain feel for the dance and he is the master of it. His moves are lyrical, musical, flowing and elegant...he is one of a kind. OK..in this and another dance he slips more into a side "V" embrace (after all he is on stage and wants to show more) and for an instant or two he actually steps back and breaks the embrace (a no-no in my book!)..so, I was joking and just saying that gee, I hope he doesn't go for Nuevo.. I would
kill myself.:-(

This is my credo, too. Though, I´m no pure close-embrace-dancer, at all! I dance in close hold (apilado), if the music requires it (as for guradia vieja, milonguero, 30th), and in V-hold (Salón, dramatic, golden aera), and open (neo-, non-, aso ...). That was my last step of dance evolution to change the embrace as it takes.

I find it small-minded to be fixed to one style, only, and I don´t like nuevo dancers dancing in open hold to milonguero style music (30th) and vice versa.

We are different here; I am going for a certain expression, feeling that is present in close embrace. It just isn't there for me in open hold. I like the Salsa and have danced it but I don't anymore. I wouldn't even dance a single step of any other kind of dance. I grew up with swing, foxtrot, etc...I wouldn't touch any of them unless I was cornered in a situation (wedding) and had to... does this make me narrow minded? No, it makes me Monogamous. Would you make love to other women if you had found THE woman of your dreams? I don't play at AT...I am consumed by the feel of it.

I'm pretty close to this as well. Certain songs seem to say "connection" for me, while others say something else. Even to Neotango music, I try to stay close when I can, although I'll open up some for figures.

When I began learning AT the only hold we knew of was the open embrace, and I enjoyed it. Then I discovered close embrace and I never looked back. I can dance both, but I feel close embrace is so much more intimate and fulfilling that it is my only choice.

I don't see how the music requires anything, unless I'm trying to be historically accurate, which I'm not.

so what about other dances where there is a close embrace; eg kizomba which I tried last night and when I danced with the female teacher she followed as well as any tango dancer I've danced with and as good a connection.

I dont think in such absolute terms. I can have an intimate conversation with someone on the phone yet feel distant to someone who is in physical proximity. I had a jive dance with someone last week where i was shifting in and out of close embrace to a jive hand to hand connection, but the dance was electric because the woman I was dancing with was giving me her total attention. I get this in tango too but it doesnt depend on the closeness of the embrace. I danced with another dancer who seemed to be very comfortable in close embrace but couldnt follow simple leads into a cross, or a back ocho.

I think that it's "Different strokes for different folks"..certainly, folks/(we) simply

That´s interesting: A lot of teachers and schools start with close embrace b.c it is easier to learn than open. We had a thread about what is easier open or close, but I cannot find it.

hi Mario, sorry, I did not mean you! I meant those dancers that do not (cannot) change their style according to the music. You are not included ! I did not mean to start a style strife, but I wanted to stress that a lot of dancers are rather insensitive concerning the music.

As far as I'm concerned, people can dance a particular song whatever way that they feel it, and as long as they're not causing a (navigational) problem for others, then it's all good.

If someone doesn't like a particular style of music, or a particular song, then not dancing to it is perfectly normal. Example, I can't understand why someone would want to dance to a Tom Wait song (I think his voice is horrible), but there are some people that apparently do like him. I'll sit those out every time. It doesn't mean those people should be banned (although maybe the DJ should :mrgreen: ), it just means their feelings are different from mine.

Now, all it takes is for people to realize that their preferences work for them, but that not everyone feels the same and it doesn't make anyone better or worse...or connected or not...or more real or not...or blah blah blah. To each their own; no need to judge.

I don't know what Neotango music is. I dance to tango music that was composed for dancing. I want a man to hold me in his embrace so we are connected throughout the dance. That's what it's about for me. Phooey with the figures. I'm not impressed. They interrupt being in the now.

I think that it's not about what a man or a woman wants. Rather, I think it's very individual, and not a gender based preference. Neither my life partner (a spectacular tango dancer) nor I are interested in an evening of holding or being held. We are interested in other aspects of the dance. But that's just us. And I don't try to sell my vision to anyone else, and I try not to belittle any other visions of the dance, so please gentle readers, don't interpret this as a negative comment.

That's because you don't recognize as valid anything that differs with your opinion of what tango is or should be, which is an incredibly restrictive and narrow-minded opinion. If you actually listened to what anyone said who didn't agree with you 110%, you might find the reason for why sometimes people want connection and other times they're looking for something else.
