DWTS Season 5 - Week 5

I'm surprised with the praises given to Jennie here, because I thought she looked tentative and nervous and didn't really sell the dance. When Derek sat on the stairs and watched her gyrate, she looked so uncomfortable.

I didn't get the impression that Helio looked "painful". He had a nice little solo moment and I thought his facial expression there was spot on. But like in his Viennese Waltz, his arms didn't look fluid and his head moved forward again.

I agree with you all about Jane and Mel.

Mark will probably go, and Marie will likely get a lot of sympathy votes and avoid elimination. But... she should consider quitting. There are more upcoming fast dances for her which will wear her out even more. And the samba she did tonight wasn't that fast.

They have to be assigned their music...it fits them too well sometimes. Not the music, of course, but the song. Like the season when Billy Ray got his own song. And this time with Mel. And when they gave Mark Cuban earlier on the song about having money(cant remember the name). I guess they figure it makes it interesting. But I do think they are trying to ensure Mel stays this week, which would be fine by me. I really dont have a favorite at this point. Helio's been disappointing for me the last couple of weeks, and although I do not think she is the best dancer, I sort of like Jennie simply because you can see the HUGE improvement in her(thanks to Derek, I am sure). Yes, she still looks a little uncertain at times, but considering what she started with I'm really quite impressed. And I really wish I could move my arms and legs like Jane. But as for voting, I havent voted since the first couple of weeks, when I had clear favorites.

I love Helio normally, but the expression on his face tonight looked either pained or constipated, I cant figure out which. Either one, he looked so silly that I couldnt even watch his dancing (and normally I LOVE him!).

I love Helio as well, but last night he sort of had that 'Blue Steel' look from Zoolander. :o

I don't understand the Helio penomenon. I mean, he started off dancing with such beautiful fludidity and grace that it seemed he was blessed with the gift of being a natural born dancer, something Mark and Cameron will never have ( and I wish I had). Ever since, certainly in the VW and this week, he has lost it. He is awkward, his head moves in, his arms are stiff, he doesn't have much hip action, but mostly, what is strange is that he has lost that ability to move fluidly. It probably is that now he is thinking about it whereas before he just did what came naturally. Perplexing... Maybe Julianne can do something about it.

I dont understand it either. I am stumped.

I love how they equalize the help the celebs get on the show. Like last season, Apollo got help from Derek, a professional dancer. Joey Fatone got help from Jerry Springer. Then this season, they get Cheetahchick help from Shirley Ballas. And Cameron got help from Susan Lucci? Next season they'll probably have Victor Fung help some guy quickstep, then let another celeb get help from Jimmy Kimmel's Guillermo.

I don't get Helio's trip to the beach. If it's to try to develop the chemistry, then why wear sunglasses that block them from seeing each other's eyes?

Not a bad samba from Jennie. There seemed to be an effort to cover traditional samba flavor with some decent flair as well. There seemd to be a bit of a slow down towards the end.
I liked that. I could see the samba in her dancing. More so than some of the others..Marie for example, way too slow....

Perhaps it was because the show started with Marie's dramatic collapse, but it didn't seem like any of the couples had a great performance last night. It seems like everyone has hit a plateau at this point in the season, and it's becoming harder to show major improvement from week-to-week. I guess that's just the price of having such an evenly matched field.

Jennifer Lopez's grandmother died Saturday and they are having some sort of memorial mass or something today. Wonder if that means she, like Gloria Estefan before her, will not be performing tonight? Or wonder if that is why they said it would be live rather than taped, so that she wouldnt have to be there until tonight? Not sure about that but I do know that this season the show seems to be a bit cursed. Jane's mom dies, Samantha comes back only a month after having her kid, Gloria Estefan's mom has to have surgery, Jennie falls while performing, Jane's home is threatened by fire, Marie passes out, Jennifer Lopez's grandmother dies....not a good first part of the season!

Well then I cant figure out why they made such a big deal about saying that we were getting two live shows this week.....doesnt make sense(and how is that different than any other week? I dont get it). Anyway, glad she taped it. The backup singers did good in place of Gloria Estefan but I wanted the real JLo!

I think they may have meant that she's doing two numbers, and they certainly seem intent on maintaining the fiction that everything on the Tuesday night shows is being broadcast live (well, at least to the East coast) the same as on Monday night.

OH! And totally NOT COOL to give Mel one of her own songs to dance to, which just happens to be a great samba. Not fair at all...add that to the too high marks and I think the show is trying to compensate for her lack of votes by trying everything they can to keep her on.

Didn't Billy Ray Cyrus dance to his own song last season? Wasn't it something like "Gimme back my mullet" or some such thing? Remember, he tried to scalp Karina when the wig wouldn't come off.

However, if you can't dance well to your own song, then I don't know what to say.
